    Abstract: A wireless network includes a source node, a destination node, and at least a first relay node. The network is arranged to determine a first measure of signal quality for a direct link between the source node and the destination node, and a second measure of signal quality for a link between the source node and the destination node via at least one relay node. At a relay node, the duration of a recruitment slot is determined, within which the relay node may transmit a recruitment message indicating availability of the relay node to relay. The recruitment slot duration is determined on the basis of the first measure of signal quality. In this way, the recruitment of a relay may depend on the signal quality of the direct link from the source node to the destination node.
