One preferred embodiment of the present invention provides a handle and shaft assembly including a rotatable shaft with a shaped end portion, where the shaped end portion has a non-circular cross-section. A handle cross-member is mounted to the shaft. A first distal portion of the cross-member is offset from the shaft. A pedestal is mounted to the distal portion of the cross-member. A ball portion is associated with the pedestal. In one embodiment, a knob defines a socket, which is coupled to the cross-member with a ball and socket joint. In a preferred shaft connection assembly, a locking member is fittingly engaged to the shaped end portion of the rotatable shaft such that the locking member and the rotatable shaft are substantially rigid in rotation. The locking member is also fittingly engaged with the cross-member such that the locking member and the cross-member are also substantially rigid in rotation. In one alternate embodiment, the locking member is a washer with an internal channel which engages the shaped end portion of the shaft. The washer includes a periphery which engages the cross-member to prevent movement between the cross-member and the shaft.

The spinning reel oscillation mechanism 6 includes a drive gear 20, a worm 21, a driven gear 23, and a slider 22. The drive gear 20 is fitted non-rotatably on a master gear shaft. The worm 21, superficially into which intersecting helical grooves 21a are formed, is disposed paralleling the spool shaft. The driven gear 23 is provided non-rotatably on the worm. Rotation of the drive gear 20 is transmitted to the driven gear 23. The slider 22 is fitted reciprocatingly in the body of the reel. The slider 22 has an engagement that engages with the helical grooves 21a, and the spool shaft is fitted back-and-forth immovably to the slider 22.

The control shaft is biased to an extended position relative to the reel body. A hollow housing is fixed on the inner end of the rotary arm, and permits extension of the control shaft therethrough. The control shaft is axially movable from the extended position to a retracted position. A spring member is disposed in the housing. A retaining member includes an elongated retaining plate that has an inner end pivotally connected to a pivot member disposed in the housing, and a push knob connected fixedly to an outer end of the retaining plate in such a manner that the knob is exposed outwardly from the housing. The retaining plate is biased by the spring member to engage an annular groove in the control shaft when the control shaft is at the retracted position. The knob can be pushed way from the handle unit so as to result in rotation of the retaining plate around the pivot member.

A high gear is disposed on the drive sleeve between clutch washers, the clutch washers providing frictional resistance against the high gear in order to engage the high gear, which in turn engages a high pinion gear that turns the spool. A tension preset device selectably adjusts the drive sleeve and the drive shaft axially relative to each other, squeezing the high gear between the clutch washers.

A double-drag type lever-drag mechanism for a double-bearing trolling reel. The drag mechanism is configured to improve overall reel braking and drag performance by securing the brake release state reliably and by a design that curbs increase in spool inertia and provides for ease of operation and precision in attaching the drag cover. The lever drag mechanism 7 brakes the spool 3 rotation in the line spool-out direction, and is equipped with a brake disk 25 non-rotatably fitted to one end of the spool such to be axially shiftable a predetermined distance. Sandwiching the brake disk 25 between friction disk 26, immobilized against axially outward movement, and axially shiftable friction disk 27 rotates the drag/brake disks 25-27 unitarily with the spool 3. Against the spool 3 a coil spring 28 urges the brake disk 25 away from the spool 3. A shifting mechanism 29 reciprocates the spool 3 and drag/brake disks 25-27 axially. The mounting configuration for the drag cover includes a circular groove 3c radially beyond which is a plurality of circumferentially spaced threaded holes 3d in the end face of the spool 3; a tubular centering portion 41c that snugly fits into the circular groove 3c, radially extending from which is a ring-shaped mounting portion 41b; an O-ring 42 in the circular groove 3c making sealing contact circumferentially with the tubular centering portion 41c; and a plurality of machine screws 44 passing through-holes in the mounting portion 41b and screwed into the threaded holes 3d.

A device for driving a spinning reel is to rotate a rotor shaft and a spool shaft in the opposite direction to each other while reciprocating the spool shaft back and forth. A first spiral gear of a rotor shaft and a second spiral gear for rotating a spool shaft in the opposite direction of rotation of the rotor shaft are respectively engaged to a drive gear in the opposite direction to each other to thereby rotate the rotor shaft and the spool shaft in the opposite direction to each other. The spool shaft has a cross-shaped spiral groove thereon and a guide pin for reciprocating the spool shaft back and forth is engaged with the spiral groove. Therefore when the drive gear is rotated, a rotor and a spool is rotated in the opposite direction to each other, and at the same time, the spool fixed to the spool shaft is reciprocated back and forth.
