    摘要: The optical device comprises a first substrate 10 having a control circuit formed on; optical waveguide layer 40 formed above the first substrate and having a refractive index changed by electro-optic effect; and second substrates 14a, 14b having prism electrodes 18 for applying voltages to the optical waveguide layer. The control circuit and the prism electrodes are electrically connected to each other via columnar conductors 20. Even in a case where thermal expansion coefficients of the control substrate and of the light deflection substrates are very different from each other, the pins are flexed corresponding to eternal forces, whereby junction is protected from being damaged in the joining processing. Thus, the optical switch can be highly reliable.

    摘要: The invention relates to an integrated optics coupling element that includes a substrate, an optical guide core, an optical cladding independent of the core and surrounding at least one portion of the core in a zone of the substrate called the zone of interaction. The cladding has at least in the zone of interaction a modulation of its structure so as to form a grating. The refractive index of the cladding is different from the refractive index of the substrate and lower than the refractive index of the core at least in the part of the cladding next to the core in the zone of interaction.Embodiments of the invention may be used to make gain flatteners for optical amplifiers or to make linear response filters whose wavelength is on a spectral band.

    摘要: In a conventional optical signal processing device, a confocal optical system is configured in which a focusing lens is positioned at a substantially-intermediate point of a free space optical path. Thus, the free space optical system had a long length. It has been difficult to reduce the size of the entire device. The optical signal processing device of the present invention uses a lens layout configuration different from the confocal optical system to thereby significantly reduce the length of the system. The optical signal processing device consists of the first focusing lens positioned in the close vicinity of a signal processing device, and the second focusing lens positioned in the vicinity of a dispersing element. A distance between the dispersing element and the signal processing device is approximately a focal length of the first focusing lens. Compared with the conventional technique, the length of the optical path can be halved.

    摘要: Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to nanowire-based modulators that can be used to encode information in a carrier channel of electromagnetic radiation. In one embodiment of the present invention, the modulator includes a waveguide configured to transmit one or more channels of electromagnetic radiation. The modulator includes a first terminal and a second terminal. The first terminal and the second terminal are positioned on opposite sides of the waveguide. The modulator also includes a number of nanowires, wherein each nanowire interconnects the first terminal to the second terminal and a portion of each nanowire is operatively coupled to the waveguide. The nanowires modulate the one or more channels when an electrical signal of appreciable magnitude is applied to the first terminal and the second terminal.
