A reader generates a scanning beam for reading a bar code symbol on a selected item. The reader includes a database in which codes for all symbols to be read are stored, and frequency of use data indicative of how often each stored code has been read. A processor compares the code of the symbol being scanned with the stored codes. Upon a successful comparison, the code is processed as a valid code. Upon failure to match the code to one of the stored codes, a most likely code is selected as the valid code. The most likely code is based on the frequency of use data.

An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a laser diode to create the scanning laser beam. Laser diodes are characteristically astigmatic, and when passed through a rotationally symmetric lens the beam typically forms a waist both in the x (scanning) direction and in the y (perpendicular) direction. The width of the beam envelope in the x direction is adjusted by means of a conventional lens. The width of the beam envelope in the y direction is adjusted by the use of a non-planar mirror, preferably a cylindrical mirror, as the rotating or oscillating element.

A circuit for digitizing an analog signal generated from a photoelectric conversion of reflected light when scanning indicia having spatially-separated, light-reflective portions bounded by edges includes a differentiator for differentiating the analog signal. An inverter inverts the differentiated signal to generate an inverted signal. A negative peak detector detects negative amplitude peaks and a positive peak detector detects positive amplitude peaks of the differentiated signal and generate, respectively, a negative and positive peak signal. Adders are used to add the positive peak signal to the inverted signal, and the negative peak signal to the inverted signal. A comparator compares the two summed signals to the differentiated signal and generates pulse signals indicative of the edges of the analog signal. A controller, in response to the pulse signals, generates a digital signal corresponding to the indicia being scanned.

A holographic grating element is provided which enables tracing different scan lines. The element is divided into a plurality of sectors. A first grating pattern is provided which diffracts a beam in one direction, and a second grating pattern is next to the first and diffracts the scan beam in the reverse direction. Sectors can be produced with different sector sizes to enable scanning at different rates in the reverse direction, or in successive scans in the same direction. Angle relationships are described to produce diffraction patterns for a desired relationship between disc rotation and the angle of the scan line.

A drive circuit for a bar code scanner for driving an oscillatory resonant motor therein which periodically oscillates in opposite rotary directions to impart an oscillatory motion to a scanning mirror of the bar code scanner. In the disclosed drive arrangement, the motor is driven at its own natural resonant frequency, which requires very little current to maintain the oscillatory motion. A scanning beam is directed against the oscillating scanning mirror, which causes the beam to be periodically scanned across a field of view of the bar code scanner. A detector detects reflections of the scanned beam, as by a bar code symbol being scanned, and generates an output signal representative thereof. The resonant motor, having a rotor with a permanent magnet mounted thereon, drives the scanning mirror, and includes a drive winding positioned adjacent to the permanent magnet for applying a driving force thereto only in a first rotary direction, and a feedback winding also positioned adjacent to the permanent magnet for deriving a substantially sinusoidal feedback voltage as the permanent magnet periodically passes in opposite directions by the feedback winding. A drive circuit for the resonant motor includes a drive amplifier coupled to the feedback winding which is turned on only by positive halves of the feedback voltage. A driver transistor is coupled between the drive amplifier and the drive winding to drive the motor only during positive halves of the feedback voltage. A return biasing spring drives the rotor in the second rotary direction.

A bar code scanner which is responsive to the movement of the scanner to activate its light source. The scanner includes a motor having a moving member which is set in motion when the scanner is displaced from a rest position. The moving member generates a voltage in a coil, which activates the operation of the bar code scanner.

The device is in particular a compact bar code reader which incorporates internal unitary structure with a resiliently mounted integral scanning motor for compactly supporting various laser and optics components for modular installation in the device, and which protects at least the integral scanning motor from external impacts and shock loads.

A scan board module includes a printed circuit board on which optical and scanning components are mounted in an optically-aligned relationship. The module is mountable in hand-held heads and protected from damage due to external shock by shock mounts, or in workstations which are either directly of indirectly connected to a cash register-type terminal or hand-held terminal.
