摘要: The present invention relates to systems and methods providing content-access-based information retrieval. Information items from a plurality of disparate information sources that have been previously accessed or considered are automatically indexed in a data store, whereby a multifaceted user interface is provided to efficiently retrieve the items in a cognitively relevant manner. Various display output arrangements are possible for the retrieved information items including timeline visualizations and multidimensional grid visualizations. Input options include explicit, implicit, and standing queries for retrieving data along with explicit and implicit tagging of items for ease of recall and retrieval. In one aspect, an automated system is provided that facilitates concurrent searching across a plurality of information sources. A usage analyzer determines user accessed items and a content analyzer stores subsets of data corresponding to the items, wherein at least two of the items are associated with disparate information sources, respectively. An automated indexing component indexes the data subsets according to past data access patterns as determined by the usage analyzer. A search component responds to a search query, initiates a search across the indexed data, and outputs links to locations of a subset and/or provides sparse representations of the subset.

摘要: The system and method of the present invention provides peripheral awareness of information to a user. The information to be provided is either determined automatically, or specified by the user. Once the information to be provided is determined or specified, it is automatically tracked or watched via at least one conventional communications interface for accessing one or more conventional communications sources. Current information is then automatically dynamically provided in an interactive peripheral display which minimizes any potential distraction to the user. Determining or specifying, tracking or watching, and providing the information is accomplished using at least one customizable dynamic encapsulated object, a “ticket,” that when paired with a “viewer,” provides peripheral awareness of information to the user. Further, in one embodiment, the tickets are sharable among users, and may be copied, cut, pasted, saved, transmitted, dragged and dropped from web pages, etc., like any other electronic file using conventional techniques.

摘要: A multimedia server computer or other device can provide multimedia content, as well as summaries of the multimedia content, to one or more client computers. Each of the users of a client computer is identified as being part of a particular group and summaries are generated for each group. Each summary includes those portions of the multimedia content that are most interesting to previous users of the corresponding group.

摘要: A human viewing temporally-dimensioned content of a multimedia document through use of a computer can add substantive content to temporally-dimensioned content of the multimedia document to thereby annotate, comment upon, and augment the multimedia document. Thus, a multimedia document becomes a basis for collaborative work. The substantive content added by the viewing user is in the form of a temporal annotation which identifies a particular relative time in temporally-dimensioned content of the multimedia document and which includes user-authored content provided by the viewing user. Display of the multimedia document includes presentation of the temporal annotations created by the user. A graphical user interface enables the user to select a temporal annotation from a list and immediately proceed to presentation of the multimedia document such that temporally-dimensioned content is presented at the particular relative time represented by the selected temporal annotation. In addition, as temporally-dimensioned content of the multimedia document is displayed, temporal annotations are represented in the display of the multimedia document as the particular relative time represented by each temporal annotation is reached. Thus, the user-authored content becomes part of the display of the multimedia document in a temporal context.

摘要: A physically-modulated friction stylus system and method for physically modulating friction between a styli tip and a surface of a computing device to emulate the “feel” of different types of writing instruments writing on different types of surfaces (such as pen on paper or a paintbrush on canvas). The actual friction between the stylus and the surface is modulated to produce the “feel.” The friction is physically modulated “on the fly” meaning that friction can be modulated while the stylus tip is in contact with the surface and while the stylus is moving. The friction is modulated dependent on a location of the stylus on the surface and the posture and orientation of the stylus. In addition, the friction can be modulated based on a direction and a velocity that the stylus tip is moving across the surface. Audio may also be used to improve the emulation experience.

摘要: Described is a technology by which a link to content is visibly augmented to convey information related to a cached status of the linked-to content. In one aspect, a cached versus not cached indication may be provided to convey such cache-related information to a user. Staleness of cached content also may be indicated. Also described is pre-fetching and/or updating cache content, which may be conveyed to the user by the conveyed cache-related status information.
