Laterally adjacent tubular casings having male interlock structures and multiple female interlock structures defining recesses for receiving a male interlock structure are used to create subterranean barriers for containing and treating buried waste and its effluents. The multiple female interlock structures enable the barriers to be varied around subsurface objects and to form barrier sidewalls. The barrier may be used for treating and monitoring a zone of interest.

A new pile assembly and process are disclosed. A pile cap is attached to a pipe pile. A partition is installed below the pile cap creating an air chamber between them that is at surface atmospheric air pressure. An external conduit containing a valve that is closed connects the pile's interiors above and below the partition. The pile is driven into the ocean floor filled with entrapped sea water below the partition so that little or no soil core is generated. After the clay soils adjacent to the pile have regained their strength, the valve is opened. A small amount of sea water expands into the air chamber. The pressure on both sides of the partition and the bottom of the pile cap is now slightly above surface atmospheric air pressure. It is the downward force of hydrostatic pressure on top of the pile cap that increases the tension capacity of the driven pile. In deep water hydrostatic pressure is substantial, constant and cheap.

The apparatus comprises a piling hammer with falling weight (4) and an impact cap (3) acting on the tube (1). The machine is characterized by frame means adapted for movement along a track means, which frame means supports an engine which drives an earth boring auger as well as casing pusher apparatus for pushing casing sections into the earth fill as the boring operation progresses. The machine is further characterized by a fluid actuated pusher cylinder means for advancing the auger into the earth fill and associated automatic auger feed control means for automatically maintaining a constant fluid flow rate to said pushing cylinder means under variations in resistance to auger penetration of said earth fill during a boring operation.

An improved shaft drill break-out system is disclosed that utilizes three separate out-put torques for the power swivel used to break-out, make-up and rotate the drill stem and attached drill bit for earth boring. When removing drill stem from the hole, the power swivel is tightened to the upper end of the drill stem with the largest torque. Thus, when the upper section of drill stem is lifted for breaking the bottom connection from the next lower section of drill stem, it is assured that this bottom connection will be broken since when going in the hole this connection was made-up with the intermediate torque. The lowest torque is used for drilling. As a consequence, sufficient torque for break-out is assured with proper selection of each of the three torques. Additionally disclosed are break-out arms and a slip assembly adapted for selected engagement with vertical slots in the drill stem to facilitate make-up and break-out.
