摘要: Systems and methods for constructing a stator for use in downhole equipment such as ESP systems, where granulated filler material is used instead of encapsulants to provide mechanical support to the stator windings, provide electrical insulation in the stator slots, and conduct heat away from the windings. In one embodiment, a stator for an electric motor includes a plurality of laminations stacked together to form a stator core. Stator windings are positioned in slots within the stator core. The stator core and windings are installed in a stator housing, and a solid, granular filler material is used to fill an unoccupied volume within the slots. Retainer fittings are secured to the stator to retain the granulated filler material in the slots.

摘要: Systems and methods for enabling communication using two different alternative protocols on a single communication line between remote tools and control equipment used in well operations. In one embodiment, a system includes control equipment, remote tools and a communication line coupled between the control equipment and the remote tools. Each remote tool detects mode control signals on the communication line and operates alternately in either a first mode or a second mode in response to detecting corresponding mode control signals. The first mode enables two-way communication of data on the communication line according to a first communications protocol. The second mode enables one-way communication of data on the communication line from the remote equipment to the control equipment according to a second protocol. The second protocol is different from the first protocol, and may be incompatible with the first protocol.

摘要: Systems and methods for the construction of electric motors, where expandable material is inserted into the slots in which magnet wires are positioned and expanded in the slots to mechanically restrain the wires. One embodiment comprises a downhole electric motor such as might be used in an electric submersible pump (ESP) system. The motor has a stator with multiple slots in which magnet wires are positioned. A slot liner is positioned in each slot and an expansion pad is positioned in each slot between the slot liner and the slot wall nearest the bore of the stator. The wires are positioned inside the slot liner. When the motor is almost completely assembled, it is filled with oil. Some of the oil is absorbed by the expansion pads, which then expand to fill the unoccupied volume in the slots, thereby restraining the movement of the wires within the slots.

摘要: Systems and methods for connecting misaligned pipe sections, where two sets of variably spaced bearings enable the transfer of evenly distributed pressure from a collar member to a coupling member. One embodiment comprises a misalignment coupling that includes first and second coupling members, a collar, and two sets of bearings. The collar is positioned around the second coupling member and has a flange for coupling to a flange of the first coupling member. The bearings are positioned in an annular space between the second coupling member and the collar. The two sets of bearings have variable spacing and are interleaved, with one set contacting the collar and one set contacting the second coupling member. When the flanges are secured to each other, contact pressure is transferred from the collar through the bearings to the second coupling member, thereby applying contact pressure between the first and second coupling members.

摘要: One embodiment is a wall-less trap that includes a base, vertical supports, an upper cage, one or more guides connected to the upper cage, and a trigger. The base is positioned on a horizontal surface. The vertical supports extend upward from the base. The upper cage is movable between a raised position, in which the upper cage is suspended above the base, and a lowered position, in which the upper cage rests on the base or the horizontal surface. The guides are connected to the upper cage and slide on the vertical supports to guide vertical travel of the upper cage. The trigger can be either engaged to hold the upper cage in the raised position, or disengaged to allow the upper cage to fall downward from the raised position. The trigger is movable from the engaged position to the disengaged position by an animal positioned under the upper cage.

摘要: Systems and methods for monitoring partial discharge within a remotely located and inaccessible electric motor. One embodiment comprises a downhole electric motor of an electric submersible pump system positioned in a well. The motor includes a partial discharge monitoring system coupled to the motor's power terminals. The partial discharge monitoring system includes a filter subsystem, a processing subsystem, and a communication subsystem. The filter subsystem allows higher frequency signals to pass from the terminals to the processing subsystem. The processing subsystem identifies signal constituents that are associated with partial discharge, and may perform various types of processing or analysis of the signal received from the processing subsystem. The partial discharge information generated by the processing subsystem is passed to the communication subsystem, which communicates the information to remotely located surface equipment. The subsystems of the partial discharge monitoring system are configured to operate in a high-pressure, high-temperature downhole environment.

摘要: Systems and methods in which output power that would conventionally be provided by surface equipment to drive downhole equipment, is transformed to increase the voltage before transmitting the power over a power cable to downhole equipment. The downhole equipment includes a step-down transformer that receives power from the power cable at a voltage which is too high to drive the motor or other downhole equipment and reduces the voltage to a level that is suitable for use by the downhole equipment. The step-down transformer may utilize toroidal transformers that are positioned around other components of the system, such as the shaft that couples a motor to an electric submersible pump. The step-down transformer may be configured as a modular unit that can be inserted between components (e.g. motor and seal) that are manufactured using conventional designs.
