Abstract:
A method, apparatus, and system are disclosed for configuring an operating system on a target computer. A configuration module configures a target computer as a diskless client. A boot module boots the target computer to a setup state. A communication module establishes communications between the target computer, a donor storage device of a donor computer, and a virtual disk. A copy module copies a configuration image from the donor storage device to the virtual disk. The configuration image comprises an operating system and a software configuration installed on the donor computer. A modification module modifies the configuration image on the virtual disk to conform to a hardware configuration of the target computer.
Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for storage write caching. A storage address translation table is used to overlay a user image and a common image. A storage driver stack module receives a storage access call and generates a storage access request with a requested file path and a requested storage address. A storage mapper module receives the storage access request, accesses the storage address translation table, and looks up a matching entry in the storage address translation table where the requested file path matches a saved file path and the requested storage address matches a saved common storage address, and maps a saved user storage address from the matching entry if a match exists.
Abstract:
If a user forgets the power-on password of his computer, he can depress the “enter” key or “access” key once to cause the BIOS to locate the power-on password in memory and attempt to unlock the HDD using the power-on password to boot a secure O.S. The HDD password either can be the same as the power-on password or the HDD can recognize the power-on password for the limited purpose of allowing access to the secure O.S. In any case, the secure O.S. is booted for password reset.
Abstract:
An arrangement for supporting a flat panel display wherein an actuating arrangement responsively alters a physical disposition of the supporting arrangement in a manner to avert physical damage to said flat panel display. Preferably, a flat panel display cover on a laptop will “bow” or arch in a direction away from the flat panel display and the actuating arrangement can be embodied, e.g., by a lattice or grid of wiring, or by a bimetallic sheet. Electronic or mechanical actuation is conceivable and the actuating arrangement can be triggered by, e.g., the imposition of a potentially damaging object and/or by closure of the laptop. While a laptop embodiment is broadly contemplated, other applications are possible.
Abstract:
A highly efficient and effective method for deciding, in the context of a distributed computer network, how many computers will participate in an initial vote if multiple computers are started in the same general time frame.
Abstract:
An arrangement for facilitating remote booting in diskless client systems as just described. To this end, there is broadly contemplated herein the employment of a hypervisor that can freely accommodate a variety of booting arrangements for a given OS. This then ensures that few if any modifications, especially costly ones, would need to be made to the OS to ensure greater versatility.
Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for protecting hard disk data in multiple operating system environments. The present invention restricts access of a hard file to a range of logical addresses using a controller module configured to access a hard file in response to a request for a logical address, a set zero module configured to add an offset value to each request for a logical address on a hard file, and a set max module configured to set a maximum logical address accessible on a hard file. The invention limits access to a lower protected area with logical addresses below the range of logical address and a host protected area with logical address above the range of logical addresses.
Abstract:
A method and system for remotely isolating faults in computer network devices coupled to a computer network. A plurality of first computer units are coupled to the computer network. The plurality of first computer units are located on a user side of the computer network. A plurality of second computer units are coupled to the computer network. The plurality of second computer units are located on a service provider side of the network. One of the plurality of second computer units is designated to provide computing services to one of the plurality of first computer units. One of the plurality of first computer units experiencing a fault communicating with its designated second computer unit uses another of the plurality of first computer units as a proxy computer unit to remotely isolate the fault.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for method or system which is able to control access to a new computer user password reset. The system is preloaded with a random password that does not needed to be known by anyone. There are two main situations in which this method will be used. The first situation involves a locally managed password and account where the user does not log in to a domain. The second situation involves remote management, where the user logs in to a domain.
Abstract:
An apparatus for managing a data rate based on an amount of available data for a predetermined time period includes a storage device storing machine-readable code and a processor executing the machine-readable code. The machine-readable code includes a determination module determining a target data rate for data communication over a network by a network device. The target data rate is based on an amount of available data for a predetermined time period and an amount of time remaining in the predetermined time period. The machine-readable code includes a data rate module maintaining the data rate at or below the target data rate in response to the determination module determining the target data rate.
