At least two reception systems share a voltage controlled oscillator of a frequency converting portion that performs frequency conversion of a signal based on the digital modulated high frequency signal, a reference signal oscillator, and a PLL circuit that generates a control voltage based on an output signal of the voltage controlled oscillator and a reference signal delivered from the reference signal oscillator and controls the voltage controlled oscillator based on the control voltage. The frequency converting portion delivers an intermediate frequency signal. The reception circuit includes an intermediate frequency variable gain amplifier that receives a signal based on the intermediate frequency signal. The frequency converting portion and the intermediate frequency variable gain amplifier are integrated into a single IC package, so that cost reduction and space saving can be achieved.

This invention provides a diversity receiver, which has N branches for receiving M versions of an input signal. The diversity receiver comprises N channel state information estimators, a demodulator and a combining and demapping device. After receiving the M versions of the input signal, the demodulator performs demodulation and then generates M demodulated signals. N channel state information estimators, one channel state information estimator equipped for each branch, respectively fetches the signals from the demodulator to generate M channel parameters related to the M versions of the input signal. The combining and demapping device receives the M demodulated signals, performs signal combining operations and symbol demapping, and finally generate a pre-correcting signal.

A method for controlling diversity receivers in a wireless communication device includes the steps of: determining if the wireless communication device is experiencing poor coverage (220), using a first receiver and a second receiver for diversity (230) if the wireless communication device is experiencing poor coverage, and using the second receiver for scanning (240) if the wireless communication device is not experiencing poor coverage. Thus, diversity can be used when needed to improve reception. Both receivers, however, can be used in a non-diversity mode to reduce current drain or to speed up channel acquisition when coverage is not poor.

Receivers accommodating frequency band selection methods in wireless communications systems are described. Different frequency bands are associated with different alternative carrier frequencies and/or base station cell and/or sector transmitter connection alternatives. Mobile node receivers include two receiver chains, each chain processing signals corresponding to a carrier. In some embodiments, each receiver chain includes its own controllable RF module, and individual carrier band selection is performed in each RF module. In some embodiments, the two receiver chains share a common RF module; however, each chain includes its own controllable baseband filter. In various embodiments, the first chain has higher complexity than the second chain. In most embodiments, each chain uses the same technology, e.g., spread spectrum OFDM or CDMA. Each chain obtains a quality indicator value on a different band and a comparison of quality indicator values is used in selecting the channel and carrier band for downlink traffic signaling.

The selected combination is used to send and receive MIMO signals. Switches (SW1, SW2) are provided for coupling the selected antennas to the respective transmitters (TX1, TX2) and receivers (RX1, RX2).
