Abstract: A safety brake system for a trailer comprises a brake end, an actuation end and a biasing unit. The brake end comprises a brake unit adapted to be secured to a trailer and positioned to block at least one wheel of the trailer when actuated. The actuation end comprises a mount adapted to be secured to a front end of the trailer and a probe operatively supported by the mount for displacement with respect to the trailer. The probe is operatively connected to the brake unit for actuating same. The probe is displaceable between a hitching state in which the probe is adapted to contact the hitch of a vehicle, and a braking state in which the probe actuates the brake unit. The biasing unit biases the probe against the hitch of the trailer in the hitching state and toward the braking state, such that the brake unit is actuated when the hitch is separated from the trailer.

Abstract: This invention relates to a protective cushion assembly that is adapted to protect equipment involved with vehicle towing, particularly the towing vehicle's rear bumper which contemporarily may be comprised of plastic. The cushion assembly includes an elastomeric plastic body and an associated bracket means for fastening the plastic body to an arm member that extends outwardly from the location of a vehicle-associated trailer hitch. Abstract: A hitch mechanism comprises an interlocking safety pin and a sleeve or other mechanism which, in a locking position, exposes a hole which is adapted to receive the safety pin. The safety pin includes an interlock to activate either an audible alarm, a visible alarm, of both. Abstract: A vehicle towing attachment inserted into a lower portion of a vehicle to be towed raises and holds wheels when the vehicle to be towed is towed. The attachment has three prongs for retaining a plate spring to which a wheel of the vehicle is attached. Since the three prongs are provided on the attachment, shifting of the towed vehicle in the transverse direction and the front and rear direction can be prevented without fail. Abstract: A hook-up memory gauge (10), is a convenient aid in the vertical hitching alignment of a trailer with a tow vehicle. The hook-up gauge is mounted on the side of the trailer near the support legs or support stand so as to provide a settable reminder of the trailer fore-and-aft tilt angle at vehicle disengagement. The device comprises an arcuate spirit vial (38) with a small air bubble, and a squeeze-and-slide pointer (24) for recording tilt angle. For this embodiment, the hook-up gauge is capable of measuring five degrees of tilt angle in either direction. A glass or plastic spirit vial is fastened in a cradle which is part of a mounting base of thermosettable material or metal. The squeeze pointer is slidably mounted in arcuate guide slots on either side of the spirit vial. A slight clearance from the vial is provided so it can easily be moved in the elongate direction for centering over the air bubble. At hitch disengagement, the squeeze pointer is centered over the air bubble and released, resulting in a fixed position of the squeeze pointer to provide a convenient reminder of the particular tilt angle setting. At re-engagement, the squeeze pointer serves as a reference mark. Re-alignment and centering of the air bubble with the squeeze pointer, by raising or lowering the trailer support stand or legs, results in the correct angle for re-hitching.

Abstract: A trailer breakaway safety mechanism which brings a trailer to a controlled stop after disengagement with a pulling vehicle. The mechanism consists of a cable which remains attached to the trailer after the trailer has disengaged from the pulling vehicle. As the trailer slows in relationship to the pulling vehicle, the cable activates a breaking mechanism on the trailer. Once the breaking mechanism has been fully actuated, the hook which attaches the cable to the pulling vehicle fails thereby completely releasing the trailer from the pulling vehicle. Steel balls are swaged to the cables so that when the cable is released from the pulling vehicle, a spring lock can engage the balls and prevent the cable from retracting and releasing the actuated brake. After the trailer has come to a complete stop, a screwdriver or other tool may be inserted into the housing of a mechanism to push back the spring lock and release the steel balls which thereby allows the cable to release the trailer brake.

Abstract: Safety apparatus for use with a trailer of the type having brakes is shown. If the latch mechanism on the trailer hitch is not properly closed, the brakes on the trailer are engaged thereby preventing the trailer from being towed. In addition, a warning device, such as a audible alarm and/or a light, signals the operator of the unlatched condition of the trailer hitch. If the latch mechanism becomes disengaged while the trailer is being towed, the warning device signals the operator and the brakes are engaged to stop the trailer. In a preferred embodiment actuation of the brakes is delayed to allow the operator time to stop the vehicle. The apparatus of the present invention may conveniently be mounted on the trailer so that it will be functional with any towing vehicle.
