摘要: A variable effort power steering gear including a control valve substantially as described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,454,801, an electromagnetic apparatus substantially as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,119,898 for varying the effective centering force of a torsion bar of the control valve, and a support means for a tubular spool shaft of the steering gear relative to a pinion head of the steering gear which affords the spool shaft a degree of freedom relative to the pinion head perpendicular to a lateral centerline defined by a pair of radially oriented pins connecting a valve body of the control valve to the pinion head to prevent binding between the valve body and a valve spool on the spool shaft. In a preferred embodiment, the support means includes a cylindrical journal on the torsion bar and a bushing on the spool shaft at the inboard end thereof having an elongated bore therein around the cylindrical journal with a short dimension in the direction of the lateral centerline generally equal to the diameter of the cylindrical journal and a long dimension exceeding and perpendicular to the short dimension.

摘要: A power steering system for a vehicle includes a hydraulic system for controlling resistance of a steering wheel. A valve of the hydraulic system is connected to a coil which varies positioning of the valve. A method for controlling the resistance of the steering wheel includes turning the steerable wheels of the vehicle in response to rotation of the steering wheel. The angle of the steering wheel and the speed of the vehicle are sensed and inputted into a controller. A lateral acceleration is determined based on the sensed signals by the controller. A recommended current rate of the coil is determined based on the lateral acceleration. An adjustment to the recommended current rate of the coil is determined based upon the speed of the vehicle. The recommended current rate is also modified based upon the adjustment. The modified current rate of the coil is then applied to the coil to vary the stiffness of the valve, which in turn varies the resistance to turning the steerable wheels of the vehicle.

摘要: A pinion head for a rack and pinion power steering gear including a pinion gear having hob-formed gear teeth, a spindle at one end of the pinion gear for a ball bearing, an annular skirt at the other end of the pinion gear having an outer cylindrical surface, and an annular runout groove between the pinion gear and the outer cylindrical surface affording exit clearance for a gear hob. The ball bearing on the spindle is closely adjacent the first end of the pinion gear. A plastic sleeve is in sire injection molded onto the pinion head in the runout groove after the pinion gear teeth are hob-formed and includes an outer cylindrical wall defining an extension of the outer cylindrical surface of the skin terminating close to the second end of the pinion gear. The plastic sleeve defines a sleeve bearing on the pinion head on one side of the pinion gear which cooperates with the ball bearing on the other side of the pinion gear in rotatably supporting the pinion head on a housing of the steering gear.

摘要: A motor vehicle power steering gear having a proportional control valve and an electromagnetic apparatus for varying the effective restoring torque of a torsion bar of the proportional control valve. The electromagnetic apparatus includes a cylindrical ring attached to a valve spool of the proportional control valve having "n" permanent magnets thereon with alternating radial polarity, a pole piece rigidly attached to a valve body of the proportional control valve having n/2 homopolar outer pole teeth outside of the magnet ring and n/2 homopolar inner pole teeth inside of the magnet ring in radial alignment with the outer pole teeth, and a stationary exciting coil magnetically coupled to the pole teeth. The pole teeth are grouped in n/4 symmetrically arrayed pairs. A first angle between radial centerlines of the permanent magnets is 360/n. A second angle between radial centerlines of the pole teeth in each pair is greater than the first angle (360/n) and less than two times the first angle (2(360/n)).
