Abstract: A flexible dry sprinkler includes a flexible tube, an inlet attached to an inlet end of the flexible tube, an inlet seal assembly configured to seal an inlet orifice of the inlet, and an inlet release unit configured to release the inlet seal assembly. The inlet release unit includes a frangible member configured to support the inlet seal assembly in the inlet orifice. An outlet is attached to the outlet end of the flexible tube, and includes an outlet orifice sealed by an outlet seal assembly having a thermally responsive element and an outlet seal. A flexible linkage extends between the inlet and the outlet through the flexible tube, and translates, when the outlet seal is released, a predetermined distance to operate the inlet release unit.

Abstract: A dry sprinkler has a casing tube having an inlet orifice and an outlet orifice. When the sprinkler is in a non-actuated state, an inlet seal assembly operatively seals the inlet orifice and an outlet seat assembly operatively seals the outlet orifice. A translating member extends through the casing tube between an inlet and an outlet. The translating member axially translates from a first position, in which the translating member retains the inlet seal assembly in a sealed state, to a second position, in which the translating member releases the inlet seal assembly, toward the outlet when the outlet seat assembly is released. The sprinkler has a nominal K-factor greater than 17 gpm/(psi)1/2. In addition, a difference between a cross-sectional area of the casing tube and a cross-sectional area bounded by an outer perimeter of the translating member is more than 30% of the cross-sectional area of the casing tube.

Abstract: A horizontal sidewall fire protection sprinkler includes a sprinkler body, a sealing assembly, a sleeve body, a yoke, a load screw, levers, a soldered link, a slide plate, a deflector support member, a deflector, and a spring. When ambient temperature in an occupancy reaches a predetermined temperature, the soldered link fails, the levers release, and the yoke and the load screw are forced away from the sprinkler body. The spring forces the slide plate and the deflector support member away from an inner wall of the sprinkler body toward an opening at an outer end of the sleeve body, and the deflector support member and the deflector protrude from the outer end of the sleeve body. The sealing assembly is released from a sealed state, and the fire protection sprinkler outputs fluid from a fluid supply to the occupancy.

Abstract: A horizontal sidewall sprinkler is provided which includes a sprinkler body having an inlet passage for supply of a fluid and an outlet, the outlet being closed by a sealing assembly prior to actuation of the sprinkler. The sprinkler further includes a sleeve body secured to the sprinkler body and a yoke substantially spanning a width of the sleeve body, the yoke urging a load screw against a surface of the sealing assembly facing an occupancy, and being held in place prior to actuation of the sprinkler by two levers that are joined by a soldered link. A slide plate is located near an inner wall of the sprinkler body facing the occupancy prior to actuation of the sprinkler. According to one example embodiment, a frame or two guide pins are provided for bearing and supporting a deflector. The deflector is positioned between the load screw and the sealing assembly thereby obstructing a flow of fluid from the outlet upon actuation of the sprinkler. A spring is provided in the sprinkler body, between the inner wall of the sprinkler body and pressing (1) the slide plate and (2) the frame or the two guide pins away from the inner wall. Upon actuation of the sprinkler, the levers, the yoke and the load screw are forced out of and away from the sprinkler by the force of the fluid; the spring forces the slide plate outward from the inner wall; and the force of the fluid moves the deflector away from the slide plate to a position for delivery of the fluid to the protected area.

Abstract: A bracket has a length of bar stock, with end brackets that fit over a rail or bar that forms part of a suspended ceiling or the like. The end brackets may be secured permanently to the bar stock, or their location along the bar stock may be adjustable. A central bracket is mounted on, and can preferably slide along the length of, the bar stock. The central bracket defines a bay in front of the bar stock in which a sprinkler fitting is received, and a hinged lever at the front of the central bracket can be swung shut and locked, to secure the sprinkler in place. Preferably closing the lever also presses the fitting against the bar stock, and secures the central bracket in its location along the bar stock.

Abstract: A fire protection sprinkler system is provided for the protection of commodities including Class I-IV hazards, Group A cartoned and exposed plastics (expanded and unexpanded), flammable liquids, tires, roll paper, and aerosols, stored in a plurality of adjoining racks having a longitudinal flue space between the racks. The system includes at least one fluid supply conduit in fluid communication with a source of a fire protection fluid. The system also includes at least one solid horizontal barrier covering each rack and the longitudinal flue space at a predetermined vertical spacing. The system further includes one or more rack-level fire protection sprinklers in fluid communication with the fluid supply. The sprinklers are disposed in the vertical flue space between adjacent horizontal barriers, and each sprinkler is spaced vertically from the commodities stored between adjacent horizontal barriers.

Abstract: A fire protection sprinkler includes a body having an input end and an output end, the body having an output orifice at the output end. The sprinkler includes a frame extending from the body in the output direction and a deflector supported by the frame positioned opposite the output orifice. Also, the sprinkler includes a seal assembly which seals the output orifice. The seal assembly has a first side and a second side, the first side bearing identifying indicia associated with the orientation of the seal assembly. When the first side is oriented in the input direction, a portion of the indicia is visible from the input end, to indicate a correct assembly. However, when the first side is oriented in the output direction, none of the indicia is visible from the input end, indicating incorrect assembly. The identifying indicia can take the form of one or more of the following: a color, a character, a symbol, and a mark. The seal assembly can include a cap and an annular spring washer, such as a Belleville spring washer, used to provide a pressure seal.

Abstract: A dry sprinkler is provided having a flexible tube section having openings at opposite ends of the flexible tube section. The sprinkler includes a supply line connection at one end of the tube section, the supply line connection having an opening to receive fluid from the supply line. The sprinkler has a first seal sealed with the supply line connection to prevent fluid from the supply from entering the tube section. A sprinkler head is coupled to the tube section at another end of the tube section opposite the supply line connection, the sprinkler head having a deflector, a second seal sealing an output orifice of the sprinkler head, and a thermally responsive element arranged to maintain the second seal sealed. A fluid is contained in the tube between the first seal and the second seal, wherein the fluid is not susceptible to freezing. The thermally responsive element is constructed to release the second seal in response to an elevated temperature condition, to permit the release of the fluid in the tube and release the first seal to move toward the sprinkler head.

Abstract: In the typical embodiments described in the specification, a sprinkler arrangement for protecting stored documents has a sprinkler body with an orifice providing a K factor in the range from about 1.1 to about 2.7, a pair of frame arms terminating in a boss from which a glass bulb supports a cap in position to seal the orifice in the passage, and a pair of closely spaced substantially planar deflector members having a peripheral edge spacing in a range from about 0.01 inch to about 0.60 inch. The deflector member closer to the axial passage has a plurality of slots permitting some water to pass into the space between the deflector members where it generates a very fine droplet mist and some water to be distributed outwardly in the form of fine droplets to carry the mist away from the sprinkler. A recess formed in the surface of the second deflector member facing the first deflector member provides a cavity which promotes atomization and generates turbulence.
