    摘要: A portable mechanical ventilator having a Roots blower is configured to provide a desired gas flow and pressure to a patient circuit. The mechanical ventilator includes a flow meter operative to measure gas flow produced by the Roots blower and an exhalation control module configured to operate an exhalation valve connected to the patient circuit. A bias valve connected between the Roots blower and the patient circuit is specifically configured to generate a bias pressure relative to the patient circuit pressure at the exhalation control module. The bias valve is further configured to attenuate pulsating gas flow produced by the Roots blower such that gas flowing to the mass flow meter exhibits a substantially constant pressure characteristic. The bias pressure facilitates closing of the exhalation valve at the start of inspiration, regulates positive end expiratory pressure during exhalation, and purges sense lines via a pressure transducer module.

    摘要: A ventilator for providing artificial respiration to a patient has a plurality of pneumatic components mounted on a manifold. The manifold is a one piece aluminum casting having a base with ducts formed therein to permit fluid communication between the pneumatic components. The ducts are exposed on the underside of the base and are removably sealed from the atmosphere by a gasket and sealing plate which are secured to the underside of the base so as to cover the exposed portion of the ducts. Several components are formed in the manifold as part of the casting, including an accumulator and pulsation dampener, both of which are gas storage chambers. A plurality of fins are also formed as part of the manifold, and act as a heat sink for a printed circuit board which is secured to the manifold. Removable pneumatic components are secured to mounting blocks which extend upwardly from the base and have threaded bores therein for the receipt of threaded fasteners. Fluid communication between the ducts and the pneumatic components is established through stubs which extend upwardly from the base and which are sealingly engaged by the pneumatic components. A bore through the stubs forms an access port to the ducts. The access ports as aligned with inlets and outlets on the pneumatic components when the pneumatic components are secured to the mounting blocks.

    摘要: A gas blending system includes a proportional mixing valve having a valve element movable between first and second limits of travel corresponding to a minimum and maximum percentage, respectively, of one of the gases in the blended mixture. The position of the valve element is detected by a detection mechanism, producing a position signal inputted to a microcomputer. The microcomputer also receives a control signal representing a desired percentage of one of the gases to be blended. The microcomputer calculates a desired valving element position as a function of the value of the control signal, and generates a drive signal as a function of a comparison made by the microcomputer between the detected valve element position and the desired position. A motor drives the valve element to the desired position in response to the drive signal. The system also includes an accumulator for accumulating a selected volume of gas mixture flowing from the outlet of the valve prior to delivery of the mixture to a downstream demand. The accumulator increases the effective peak flow rate capacity of the system, while "smoothing out" instantaneous changes in downstream flow rate demand before the effects of such changes are experienced at the valve.

    摘要: A medical ventilator having a valve which controls the flow of gas from a pressurized gas source to a patient for inhalation. Flow through the valve is choked and pressure upstream of the valve is held stable so that a known relationship exists between the position of the valve and the flow rate through the valve. An open loop control system causes the valve to open or close as needed to deliver a preselected tidal volume of gas to the patient on each breath. Since the flow rate is known, no feedback to the controller regarding actual flow conditions is required. The exact positioning of the valve and length of time that the valve is to be held open is predetermined by the controller before the breath is delivered, and is repeated for subsequent breaths. Preferably, the valve is driven by a stepping motor, and the controller comprises a microcomputer. The controller compensates for ramping of the stepping motor as the valve opens and closes in determining the positions of the valve required to deliver the preselected tidal volume. To ensure precise engagement between a valve member and a valve seat, the valve member is mounted on a flexible, linear wire. Additionally, a spirally-wound spring surrounds a stepping motor shaft and biases the shaft so as to close the valve in the event of a power loss.

    摘要: A valve in a medical ventilator opens and closes as is needed to permit venting of respiratory gases from a patient to the atmosphere. Changes in position of the valve are caused by a stepper motor, which is joined to the valve by a mechanical linkage. The stepper motor, in turn, is powered by electronic signals from a microcomputer controller. The position of the valve is controlled on a closed loop basis by the controller, which receives feedback regarding the pressure of the proximal gases from a pressure transducer. The valve is uniquely designed to enable the controller to cause the valve to open quickly once the patient begins to exhale, and to permit accurate control over the proximal pressure as the valve is approaching the closed position. In particular, the valve comprises a poppet and a valve seat which have curved mating surfaces, with the curved surface on the poppet being truncated so that pressure gain variance is minimized over the range of positions of the poppet relative to the valve seat. To enhance this improved pressure gain characteristic, a cam in the linkage between the poppet and stepper motor has a variable pitch. All of the components of the valve which are exposed to respiratory gases are easily removed for sterilization and replacement. Further, the poppet is movable to ensure complete closure of the valve despite variability in the tolerances of the replaceable components.
