A safety valve for use in a subterranean well includes a closure assembly, an operating member which engages the closure assembly, and at least one of the closure assembly and the operating member including a friction reducing device which provides rolling contact between the closure assembly and the operating member. Another safety valve includes a flapper which rotates about a pivot relative to a seat, a flow tube which engages the flapper to rotate the flapper, and a friction reducing device which with rolling contact biases the flow tube toward the pivot when the flow tube engages the flapper. Yet another safety valve is described in which at least one of the flapper, the seat and the flow tube has a friction reducing device attached thereto which provides rolling contact between the flapper and the flow tube, or between the flow tube and the seat.

    摘要: A wye block apparatus provides selective physical access to multiple downhole tubing strings while permitting fluid communication with each of them. In a described embodiment, a wye block apparatus is resistant to malfunction due to debris therein, in substantial part by providing an elongated deflection member which is axially rotatable within an outer housing assembly. A J-slot device is utilized to rotate the deflection member in response to axial displacement of an operating sleeve. Rotation of the deflection member selectively aligns a guide surface formed on the deflection member with one of the tubing strings attached to the wye block apparatus.

The well tool includes an actuator and an operating member displaceable to operate the well tool. The actuator includes a series of longitudinally distributed electromagnets, in which current is controllable in a predetermined pattern to thereby variably control longitudinal displacement of the operating member. In another well system, the operating member is displaceable between opposite maximum limits of displacement to operate the well tool, and an electromagnet is operative to displace the operating member to at least one position between the opposite maximum limits of displacement. In a method of operating a well tool, the well tool is operated by controlling current in a series of longitudinally distributed electromagnets of an actuator in a predetermined pattern, thereby causing corresponding longitudinal displacement of an operating member.

    摘要: Improved apparatus and methods for deploying tools in multilateral wells are disclosed. Certain ones of the apparatus and methods include a downhole tool centralizer assembly for coupling to a downhole tool. The centralizer assembly has a tubular centralizer retainer with an external surface and an annular recess on the external surface. An annular spring member is disposed within the annular recess, and the annular spring member has an outer diameter greater than a predetermined inner diameter of a bushing disposed proximate a junction between a main wellbore and a lateral wellbore. Other ones of the apparatus and methods include a downhole tool having a substantially identical tubular centralizer retainer and annular spring member. As the centralizer assembly, or the downhole tool, enters the bushing, the annular spring member elastically deforms so that the outer diameter of the spring member becomes substantially equal to the predetermined inner diameter of the bushing. Such elastic deformation prevents the centralizer assembly, or the downhole tool, from accidentally entering the lateral wellbore.

    摘要: The present invention provides a subterranean structure for controlling tool access to a lateral wellbore extending from a wellbore. The subterranean structure comprises a bushing that is located in the wellbore and proximate an opening to the lateral wellbore and that has an access window therethrough for allowing access by a tool to the lateral well through the opening. The bushing further has a slidable access control device coaxially coupled thereto. Also included is a shifter that is engagable with the slidable access control device to cause the slidable access control device to slide between an open position wherein a tool is allowed to pass through the window and the opening and into the lateral wellbore and a closed position wherein the tool is prevented from passing through the window and the opening and into the lateral wellbore. The present invention also provides a method of controlling tool access to a lateral wellbore extending from a wellbore. The preferred method comprises the steps of: 1)locating a bushing in the wellbore proximate an opening to the lateral wellbore, the bushing having an access window therethrough for allowing access by a tool to the lateral wellbore through the opening, the bushing further having a slidable access control device coaxially coupled thereto; 2)engaging the slidable access control device with a shifter to slide the slidable access control device with respect to the bushing; and 3) sliding the slidable access control device between an open position wherein a tool is allowed to pass through the window and the opening and into the lateral wellbore and a closed position wherein the tool is prevented from passing through the window and the opening mad into the lateral wellbore.

    摘要: A decentralizer for a diverter, a centralizing guide bushing and a downhole-deployable locating and orienting subsystem. The subsystem is capable of three modes of operation: (a) a running mode in which an actuating mandrel is in a first axial limit position with respect to a common mandrel, the actuating mandrel placing first and second double-acting springs in a stowed position wherein locating and orienting keys are retracted radially inwardly with respect to the common mandrel to shield the locating and orienting keys from substantial contact with a surrounding well flow conductor as the common mandrel traverses therethrough, (b) a locating mode in which the actuating mandrel is in an intermediate axial position with respect to the common mandrel, the actuating mandrel placing the first and second double-acting springs in a deployed position resiliently to bias the locating and orienting keys radially outwardly with respect to the common mandrel to seek a locating and orienting profile on an inner surface of a surrounding honed bore within the surrounding well flow conductor, and (c) a set mode in which the actuating mandrel is in a second axial limit position with respect to the common mandrel, the actuating mandrel directly engaging and stiffly retaining the locating and orienting keys in engagement with the locating and orienting profile thereby to fix the common mandrel in a desired location and orientation with respect to the honed bore.
