There is provided a process for converting methanol and/or dimethyl ether to a product containing C2 to C4 olefins which comprises the step of contacting a feed which contains methanol and/or dimethyl ether with a catalyst comprising a porous crystalline material. The contacting is conducted in the presence of a cofed aromatic compound under conversion conditions including a temperature of about 350° C. to about 550° C. and a methanol and/or dimethyl ether partial pressure less than or equal to 50 psia (345 kPa). The porous crystalline material used in the catalyst has a pore size greater than the critical diameter of the aromatic compound and a Diffusion Parameter for 2,2-dimethylbutane of about 0.1 to about 26 sec−1 when measured at a temperature of 120° C. and a 2,2- dimethylbutane pressure of 60 torr (8 kPa), and the aromatic compound is capable of alkylation by the methanol and/or dimethyl ether under said conversion conditions.

There is provided a catalyst and a process for converting methanol or dimethyl ether to a product containing C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 olefins. The catalyst comprises a porous crystalline material having a Diffusion Parameter for 2,2-dimethylbutane of about 0.1-20 sec.sup.-1 when measured at a temperature of 120.degree. C. and a 2,2-dimethylbutane pressure of 60 torr (8 kPa). In addition, the catalyst is characterized by a hydrothermal stability such that, after steaming the catalyst at 1025.degree. C. for 45 minutes in 1 atmosphere steam, the catalyst exhibits a methanol conversion activity of at least 50% when contacted with methanol at a methanol partial pressure of 1 atmosphere, a temperature of 430.degree. C. and 0.5 WHSV. The porous crystalline material is preferably a medium-pore zeolite, particularly ZSM-5, which contains phosphorus and has been severely steamed at a temperature of at least 950.degree. C.

A process for the production of a dialkyl carbonate and a diol, such as dimethyl carbonate and ethylene glycol, by reacting a feed containing a cyclic carbonate, a hydroxy alkyl carbonate and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol in the presence of a transesterification catalyst is described. In another aspect, a process is described which is particularly useful for producing unsymmetric dialkyl carbonates, such as ethyl methyl carbonate.

A process for the selective production of meta-diisopropylbenzene is disclosed, wherein the process comprises the steps of contacting cumene under disproportionation conditions and in the absence of added benzene with a catalyst comprising a porous crystalline inorganic oxide material having an X-ray diffraction pattern including d-spacing maxima at 12.4±0.25, 6.9±0.15, 3.57±0.07 and 3.42±0.07 Angstrom to produce a disproportionation effluent containing benzene and mixture of diisopropylbenzene isomers, and then recovering from said disproportion effluent a meta-diisopropylbenzene boiling range fraction in which the ratio of meta-diisopropylbenzene to ortho-diisopropylbenzene is in excess of 50 and the total amount of meta-diisopropylbenzene co-boilers excluding ortho-diisopropylbenzene is less than 1 wt % of said fraction.

An integrated process for the production of a dialkyl carbonate and a diol from an alkylene oxide, carbon dioxide and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol is described in which an alkylene oxide is first reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of a halogen-free carbonation catalyst to provide a corresponding cyclic carbonate and the cyclic carbonate is then reacted with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol in the presence of the carbonation catalyst and/or a transesterification catalyst and recycling the carbonation catalyst to provide a corresponding dialkyl carbonate and diol, wherein the dialkyl carbonate product exhibits a halogen concentration of about 5 ppm or less.

A process for the disproportionation of cumene is disclosed which comprises the step of contacting a feed containing cumene, under disproportionation conditions, with a catalyst comprising a molecular sieve, preferably TEA-mordenite. The contacting step disproportionates at least part of the cumene in the feed to provide a disproportionation effluent containing benzene and a mixture of diisopropylbenzene isomers. The effluent is then recovered and contains, prior to any separation step, less 1% of ortho-diisopropylbenzene by weight of the total diisopropylbenzene content of said effluent, less than 1 wt % of n-propylbenzene, less than 5 wt % of triisopropylbenzenes and less than 5 wt % of disproportionation products other than benzene and diisopropylbenzenes.
