Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a fixing section, a detection section, and a controller. The detection section detects a passing range of a recording medium in terms of a direction intersecting with a conveyance direction of the recording medium. A heating section of the fixing section includes a first heater and a second heater. The first heater has a longitudinal direction extending in an axis direction. The second heater has a longitudinal direction extending in terms of the axis direction from each of opposite ends of the first heater in terms of the axis direction. When a result of detection by the detection section indicates that the passing range of the recording medium does not overlap with a specific range of the second heater, the controller restricts heat generation by the second heater.

The voltage applicators 61 each apply a voltage to a corresponding one of the four primary transfer rollers 51. The current detector 62 detects a first total current value JS of currents flowing through the four primary transfer rollers 51. The voltage applicators 61 apply a detection voltage VS to a primary transfer roller 51y among the four primary transfer rollers 51 while applying a voltage having the same polarity as the detection voltage VS to all the other primary transfer rollers 51c, 51m, and 51k. The detection voltage VS is applied to detect a resistance value Ry of the primary transfer roller 51y. The detection voltage VS has a predetermined voltage value.

Abstract: A heater heats a fixing belt in contact with an inner surface of the fixing belt. The fixing belt is formed into a cylindrical shape and rotates around an axis. The heater includes a substrate and a plurality of resistance heat generating elements. The substrate is made of insulator, and elongated in the axial direction. The resistance heat generating elements are arranged on one surface of the substrate facing the inner surface of the fixing belt with gaps in the axial direction, and generate heat by being supplied with power. Abstract: A temperature detection section is disposed opposite to a heater so as to be out of contact with the heater, and detects a temperature of the heating element. A spacer is disposed so that the heater and the temperature detection section are out of contact with each other. The spacer includes a separator that separates the temperature detection section from the heater and that has a gap through which the heat is transferred from the heater to the temperature detection section and that melts upon the temperature of the heating element increasing to a specific temperature or higher. The separator after melting fills the gap.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus has an image forming portion, a fixing device, a temperature sensing device, and a control portion. The fixing device has a fixing member having a heated rotary member and a pressing member forming a fixing nip by making contact with the heated rotary member. The temperature sensing device senses the surface temperature of at least one of the heated rotary member and the pressing member in a plurality of regions in the axial direction. The control portion estimates the thickness distribution of the surface layer of at least one of the heated rotary member and the pressing member in the axial direction based on the time taken for the surface temperature in the plurality of regions to reach the predetermined temperature, and thereby estimates the lifetime of at least one of the heated rotary member or the pressing member based on the estimated thickness distribution.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus has a photosensitive member, a charging member, an exposing device, a developing device, a transfer member, a polishing member, a driving device, a voltage applying device, a torque detector, and a control portion. The photosensitive member has a photosensitive layer and a surface protection layer formed on the surface of the photosensitive layer. The polishing member has an elastic layer on its circumferential surface, and rotates with a linear velocity difference from that of the photosensitive member. The torque detector detects the torque of the driving device. The control portion estimates an attachment condition of discharge products to the surface of the photosensitive member based on the torque of the driving device detected by the torque detector. When the torque is equal to or higher than a predetermined value, the control portion performs an image degradation suppression process.
