An aqueous solution of poly(N-vinyl-.di-elect cons.-caprolactam) is prepared by polymerizing N-vinyl-.di-elect cons.-caprolactam in an aqueous medium in the presence of a polymerization initiator and from 0.1 to 20% by weight, based on the monomer used, of a water-soluble polymeric protective colloid and is useful as a textile printing adhesive, as a raw material for adhesives, as a lubricant additive, as a cosmetic formulation aid, as a detergent additive and as an opacifier in automatic shading systems.

Aqueous dispersions of polyurethanes consisting of(a) organic polyisocyanates,(b) polyesterpolyols having a molecular weight of from 500 to 5,000,(c) organic hydroxy compounds having a molecular weight of from 62 to 400 and two terminal groups which are reactive to isocyanate groups, as chain extenders, and(d) compounds containing ionic groups or groups which can be converted to ionic groups and one or more isocyanate groups or a hydroxyl or amino group which is reactive to isocyanate groups, which contain from 0.05 to 2 meq of ionic groups incorporated into the polyurethane via (d) per g of polyurethane are particularly suitable for adhesives when the chain extenders (c) are incorporated in an amount of from 1.5 to 8 moles per mole of polyols, and a minor amount of (a) can be replaced with monoisocyanates, and a minor amount of (b) with polyetherpolyols.

The invention relates to the aqueous preparation of a polymer. Said preparation contains a copolymer consisting of a) 30 to 79.5 wt. % N-vinylpyrrolidone, b) 20 to 69.5 wt. % vinylacetate, c) 0.5 to 25 wt % of a monovinyl ester of a C4 to C20 monocarboxylic acid and d) 0 to 40 wt. % of an additional, copolymerisable, ethylenically unsaturated compound.

The particle size of popcorn polymers is established during the popcorn polymerization by a process in which reaction mixtures forming popcorn polymers and comprising monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and a crosslinking agent are polymerized in the absence of oxygen and polymerization initiators at up to 200° C. and in which the popcorn polymerization is carried out as a precipitation polymerization in water or in the absence of a solvent and the particle size of the popcorn polymers is controlled in the range from 1 &mgr;m to 10 mm by passing an inert gas stream into the reaction mixture, and popcorn polymers having a mean particle diameter of from >400 &mgr;m to 1500 &mgr;m are used as beverage clarifiers, antidiarrheal drugs and disintegration accelerators for tablets.
