    摘要: The present invention relates to a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having quick response and comprising a smectic liquid crystal compound and an optically active compound.The ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprises components A and B, said component A comprising a compound represented by the formula: ##STR1## and/or a compound represented by the formula: ##STR2## said component B comprising a compound represented by the formula: ##STR3## and/or a compound represented by the formula: ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 are each an alkyl or alkoxy group of 1 to 18 carbon, R.sup.4 and R.sup.6 are each an alkyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, X and Y are each --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 --, ##STR5## m, n, k and l are each an integer of 1 or 2 and * is an asymmetric carbon atom, the component A to component B ratio being 1.5 or less. This ferroelectric liquid crystal composition can be used in a light switching element for the purpose of imparting quick response to the light switching element.

    摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprising smectic liquid crystal compound(s) and optically active compound(s) and having high-speed response properties and a light switching element containing the same are provided, which composition comprises the following three liquid crystal components A, B and C, the respective proportions thereof being 10 to 70%, 10 to 50% and 10 to 40% each by weight based on the total weight of these components, respectively:liquid crystal component A:at least one compound selected from compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each are 1-18C alkyl, and compounds of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each are 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; liquid crystal compound B:at least one compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.5 is a 1-18C alkyl, n is an integer of 0 to 10 and * indicates asymmetric carbon; andliquid crystal component C:at least one compound selected from compounds of the formula ##STR4## wherein R.sup.6 is 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy and * is as defined above; and compounds of the formula ##STR5## wherein R.sup.7 is 1-18 alkyl or alkoxy and * is as defined above.

    摘要: The present invention provides a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition wherein the phase transition series of the composition assumes an order of isotropic liquid.fwdarw.cholesteric phase.fwdarw.chiral smectic C phase starting from the high temperature and to a switching element good in contrast, and memory properties using the same. The composition comprises a composition that contains a component A of a compound having the formula: ##STR1## and/or a compound having the formula: ##STR2## wherin R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent each an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms;a component B of a compound of the formula: ##STR3## a component C of a compound of the formula: ##STR4## and a component D of a compound of the formula: ##STR5## wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.7, and R.sup.8 represent each an alkyl group or alkoxy group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, x represents ##STR6## Y and Z represent each a hydrogen atom, or a halogen atom, n is an integer of 0 to 10, and * indicates an asymmetric carbon atom; andwith the proportion of said component A being 20 to 80 wt. %, that of the component B being 5 to 30 wt. %, that of said component C being 3 to 10 wt. %, and that of said component D being 3 to 20 wt. %, based on the total amount of said four components A, B, C and D.

    摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition is here provided which contains at least one chiral compound having an optical activity site group represented by the general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group or alkoxy group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and * indicates an asymmetric carbon atom, and at least one non-chiral compound having a smectic C phase, a smectic I phase, a smectic F phase, a smectic G phase, a smectic H phase, a smectic J phase or a smectic K phase. This composition has quick response properties and assumes an SC* phase in an extensive temperature range inclusive of room temperature. Furthermore, by using this composition, an optical switching element having quick responsiveness can be obtained.

    摘要: A smectic C liquid crystal mixture having a broad smectic C phase temperature range including room temperature, a ferroelectric smectic C liquid crystal mixture having a large spontaneous polarization, comprising the above smectic C mixture and at least one optically active compound, and a liquid crystal display element having an improved response time, containing the above ferroelectric smectic C liquid crystal mixture are provided, which smectic C liquid crystal mixture comprises(1) at least two components at least one of which is a pyrimidine compound expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a linear alkyl group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms and R.sup.2 represents a linear alkyl group having 7-20 carbons and having a smectic C phase;(2) at least one pyrimidine compound of the formula (I) and at least one pyrimidine compound expressed by the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 represents a linear alkyl group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms and R.sup.4 represents a linear alkyl group having 8 to 11 carbons and having a smectic C phase; or(3) at least one pyrimidine compound of the formula (I) and at least one biphenylpyrimidine compound expressed by the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each are a linear alkyl or alkoxy group each having 1-18 carbons.

    摘要: A ferroelectic smectic C liquid crystal mixture and a display element having a quick electrooptical response and a good memory property are provided, the ferroelectric mixture having a Ps of 60 nC/cm2 or more and a tilt angle of 24.degree. or more and comprising(A) a first component comprising at least one optically active compound expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein l and m are 0 or 1, both are not 1; n is an integer of 3 to 8; X and Y are H, F, Cl, or CN, both X and Y are not H; A is --COO-- or --OCO--; and R is C3--8 alkyl or alkoxy , and(B) a second component comprising at least one optically active compound expressed by the formula ##STR2## wherein l, m, n and R are as defined above; and A is --COO--, --OCO--, --CH.sub.2 O-- or --OCH.sub.2 --, a total content of the first and second components being 60 mol % or more in the mixture.
