Abstract: 199,471. Franklin, C. S., Witt, B. J., Wright, G. M., and Smith, S. B. March 23, 1922. Directive signalling; aerials; multiplex signalling.-Two or more radiogoniometers are connected to a common aerial system of the Bellini- Tosi type so that signals can be received simultaneously from different directions and upon different wave-lengths, the polar curves in each case being rotatable without affecting the other. As shown in Fig. 2, the field coils C, C of the two radiogoniometers B, B' lie in parallel between the two limbs of each of the loop aerials A A', and are coupled through tuned search coils D, D and the primaries F, F' to the two separate receiving circuits G, G'. In order to compensate for reactive effects arising from tight coupling, the search coils D, D' are wound in two sections, the compensating winding d being at right-angles to the active winding, and being connected in a circuit comprising a tuning condenser e, an inductance f, and an adjustable resistance r. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, each receiver comprises two radiogomometers, one pair C, C' being connected as before across the aerial loops A, A', whilst the second pair c, c are similarly connected to two equivalent artificial aerials a, a . The two search coils D H and D , H are mechanically connected and are so arranged that the couplings between the coils D, D' and the receiving aerials are opposed through the artificial aerials a, a' in such manner that the mutual reactive effects of the circuits D, E, F, H, and D , E', F , H are reduced to zero. Fig. 5 shows an alternative arrangement in which the radiogonimeters B, B are connected by cables N, N to a distant aerial system, which also includes a plain aerial giving the usual cardioid polar effect and formed by connecting the middle point of each loop to earth through a resistance O in parallel with an inductance P. The goniometer B is linked through the search coil D and an intermediate phase-adjusting circuit K, tuned to the frequency of one signal, to an inductance L ; whilst the gonimeter B is similarly linked through a circuit K , tuned to the, frequency of the second signal, to an inductance L . The coils L' L are inductively coupled through the windings P, T, T' with the two loop aerials and with the plain aerial formed by connecting the middle point of each frame inductance to earth. The two search coils D, D' are coupled through separate tuned circuits M, M to the respective receivers G, G .
