    Abstract: Apparatus and method for transferring data in a data storage system, such as but not limited to a hard disc drive (HDD). An optical link is provided between an analog front end (AFE) of a data storage device controller circuit (SOC) and a preamplifier/driver circuit (preamp) mounted to a rotary actuator to transfer an analog domain signal. A selected component is extracted from the signal using a modulation element such as a micro-resonance ring (MRR) or a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Modulation (MZM) device. The extracted component is forwarded to a processing circuit to facilitate a transfer of data between a local memory and a non-volatile memory (NVM). The optical link includes a flexible portion in a flex circuit affixed to the rotary actuator and which supports the preamp. Multiplexed read, write, and power control signals are concurrently transmitted via the optical link. The link can concurrently service multiple head-disc assemblies (HDAs).

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for enhancing resolution in a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system. In some embodiments, an emitter is used to emit light pulses at a first resolution within a baseline, first field of view (FoV). A specially configured optical element, such as a refractive optical lens, is activated responsive to an input signal to direct at least a portion of the emitted light pulses to an area of interest characterized as a second FoV within the first FoV. The second FoV is provided with a higher, second resolution. In some cases, all of the light pulses are directed through the optical element to the second FoV. In other cases, the first FoV continues to be scanned at a reduced resolution. A rotatable polygon, micromirrors and/or solid state array mechanisms can be used to divert the pulses to the optical element.

    Abstract: A light detection and ranging system can have a camera sensor connected to an optical sensor and a controller with the optical sensor consisting of a light source coupled to a emitter and a detector for identifying downrange targets with photons. The camera sensor consisting of a lens for capturing a downrange image. The controller can track downrange targets with the camera sensor at a different frame rate than the optical sensor.

    Abstract: A light detection and ranging system can have a photonic integrated circuit coupled to a grating coupler and a scanning array. The scanning array may consist of a mechanical actuator configured to move at least one detector in response to a calibration operation. As a result, coherent downrange detection can be achieved with light modulation, optical mixing, and balanced detection.
