    Abstract: A liquid dispensing device and the method of dispensing liquid are disclosed. The device is uniquely suited to meet the requirements of hospitals and other institutions for long shelf life in inert condition and ready activation when needed. The device includes a hollow gas- and liquid-tight casing (preferably spherical or cylindrical), a flexible gas- and liquid-tight membrane disposed entirely across the casing interior dividing the interior into a propellant chamber and a liquid chamber; an outlet port from the liquid chamber; two mutually reactive chemicals in the propellant chamber but separated by a barrier; and a member to breach the barrier and permit the chemicals to come into contact; the two chemicals being reactive upon contact to form a propellant gas. The propellant gas thereupon expands against the membrane, moves the membrane to enlarge the propellant chamber, decrease the liquid chamber, and expel the contained liquid from the liquid chamber through the outlet port. The barrier may be breached in any convenient manner, as by breaking a frangible barrier or perforating a perforable one. Preferably at least one of the chemicals is in liquid form, and one is a Group I or II metal carbonate or bicarbonate while the other is an acid, acid anhydride or acid salt; the most preferred combination is sodium carbonate and citric acid.

    Abstract: A fluid storage-expulsion system composed of a tank having two poles and being shaped by one or more surfaces of revolution, the tank having a diametral plane and being substantially symmetrical thereabout, a fluid inlet-outlet on one side of the diametral plane, a pressurant inlet on the other side of the diametral plane and a reversible expulsion metallic diaphragm having a pole adjacent the pressurant inlet and conforming substantially to the interior shape of the tank on one side of the diametral plane, the tank being under tension and the diaphragm being under compression, whereby to prevent the diaphragm from uncontrolled buckling and to cause the diaphragm to reverse in an orderly fashion by flexural yielding upon actuation thereof by the pressurant introduced through the pressurant inlet. A method for producing such storage and expulsion system is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A pressurized thin walled can from which a fluent pressurized product is dispensed through a discharge valve. The pressurized can is divided into a product chamber and a propellant chamber by an impervious flexible diaphragm, preferably shaped in the form of a cup and formed of a plastic material, which is mounted to the wall inside the can and away from the can ends. As product to be dispensed is introduced into the product chamber, the flexible diaphragm is extended down into the can. As the product is later expelled through a discharge valve, the flexible diaphragm is fully everted in the upper region of the can to expel all the product. The can is thin walled, and upon being pressurized, the can diameter expands slightly. In one embodiment, a ring inside the can holds the flexible diaphragm in place. The ring includes a portion which expands to maintain the seal with the expanding can side wall. In another embodiment the ring is rigid, but of slightly larger diameter than the can. This ring stretches the can, so as to maintain the sealing contact with the can as the can expands.

    Abstract: A storage and discharge container divided into two parts by a resilient bowl. One part can be coupled to a pressurised source to displace the bowl and thereby discharge, through an outlet, material stored in the other part of the container. The outlet is positioned at the extremity of the displacement of a base of the bowl. The bowl characterises the device. The base of the bowl has a plate fixed to a one third portion thereof in alignment with the outlet and is of a tapering thickness, the thick portion thereof being attached to the plate. The wall of the bowl is of a compound taper, tapering peripherally to correspond with the taper of the base and also tapering to reduce in thickness towards its rim.

    Abstract: A process for forming, handling, affixing, and inverting a thin plastic half bag to a continuous inner side wall of an outer plastic container. A non-metallic mandrel is used as a tool for thermoforming a half bag over the top of the mandrel. The top of the mandrel with bag attached is inserted into an open end of the outer plastic container. A continuous stripe of heat-activated adhesive containing metal particles is bonded to the exterior of the half bag at the open end of the half bag. When the half bag is inserted, the stripe of adhesive is positioned near the midpoint of the container. A magnetic induction field generated near the container midpoint heats the metal particles in the heat-activated adhesive, thereby activating the adhesive. When the adhesive has been heated, compressed air is blown from the mandrel to press the bag and adhesive against the inner side wall of the outer container to cause bonding between them. After the field is removed and the adhesive cools, the mandrel is withdrawn from the thin plastic bag. Vacuum applied to the closed end of the bag from the top of the mandrel causes the bag to be inverted to the open end of the container as the mandrel is withdrawn.

    Abstract: A rechargeable device for spraying a fluid in a mist-like manner. The device includes an actuator head and a removable tank containing the fluid. The actuator head includes an actuator member that is movable between a predetermined high position and a predetermined low position. The removable tank includes a neck in which a pump is engaged. The pump has a hollow pump body which defines a cylindrical pump chamber filled with the fluid and in which a piston slides. Extending from the piston is a hollow actuator rod through which the fluid leaves the pump. The pump chamber is in communication with the fluid contained in the tank. A pushbutton fitted with a lateral outlet nozzle is fixed to the actuator rod of the pump, such that the actuator member presses against the pushbutton to actuate the pump. The neck of the tank includes a removable plug on which the pump is fixed. The device further includes an angular positioning mechanism for positioning the lateral nozzle angularly relative to the actuator head, and an accurate axial positioning mechanism for positioning the pump at a predetermined position. The pump body is engaged in sealing contact with the neck of the tank to establish communication with the fluid contained in the tank.
