A method for tuning spread spread spectrum receivers to a frequency of a digital signal within a specified frequency band as the steps of coarse tuning the receiver while a preamble of the digital signal is being received, fine tuning the receiver while the preamble of the digital signal is being received, and demodulating the signal. Preferably, the step of coarse tuning the receiver comprises dividing the specified frequency band into a plurality of first sub-bands, and sequentially measuring a receive signal strength within each of the sub-bands until a receive signal strength is greater than a predetermined threshold. Preferably, the step of fine tuning the receiver comprises the dividing at least one first step-band which is found to have a receive signal strength greater than a predetermined threshold into a plurality of second sub-bands when a receive signal strength is greater than the predetermined threshold, sequentially measuring a receive signal strength within each sub-band so as to determine which second sub-band contains a signal having a receive signal strength above a predetermined threshold, and determining which second sub-band contained the signal with the greatest receive signal strength.

When a mobile communication unit (e.g. a cellular telephone) is powered up, the unit must lock on to a local base station, or “acquire” a base station signal, to enable the user to send and receive calls. To lock on a local base station, the mobile unit must determine the delay at which the base station is sending the pseudo random (PN) code. This process is called the “acquisition.” The current art of acquiring a base station involves collecting a set of samples at a particular code phase, or delay, testing the collected sample, and repeating these steps using another code phase until the correct code phase is found. The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for collecting a set of samples at a particular code phase, and simultaneously testing the collected sample and collecting the next set of samples for another code phase. Using multiple banks, the system resources such as the dwell accumulators and the DSP are used concurrently to reduce the time required to test the phase delays of the short code to lock on to a base station.

A novel and improved method and apparatus for searching is described. Channel data is despread utilizing a matched filter structure. The in-phase and quadrature amplitudes of the despreading delivered to coherent accumulators to sum for a programmable duration of time. The amplitude accumulations are squared and summed to produce an energy measurement. The energy measurement is accumulated for a second programmable time to perform non-coherent accumulation. The resulting value is used to determine the likelihood of a pilot signal at that offset. Each matched filter structure comprises an N-value shift register for receiving data, a programmable bank of taps to perform despreading and optional Walsh decovering, and an adder structure to sum the resulting filter tap calculations.

Samples received RF signals are stored in a sample buffer. During standby mode, the samples are gathered during paging slots assigned to the mobile. A set of searches are performed on the samples, and if pilot signals are detected additional demodulation is performed to detect paging messages. The resulting set of demodulation data may be combined to increase detection. After a page message has been detected, additional demodulation resources may be activated to processes more complete page messages, or other information channels. In one embodiment of the invention, the searcher includes a demodulator to perform quick page detection without the use of finger elements to reduce idle mode power consumption.

A spread-spectrum signal receiving method and apparatus in which a correlation operation is performed for obtaining a correlation between a base-band component of a received spread-spectrum signal and a spread code, so as to demodulate the received signal. In the method, a correlation operation between the spread code and the base-band component, and a correlation operation at a timing equal to a timing difference between the spread code and the base-band component in the former correlation operation step, the timing difference being 1/2 of a spread-code interval, are performed. Then, based on results obtained in these correlation operations, a correlation operation result at the timing point where a timing difference between the spread code and the base-band component is less than 1/2 of the spread-code interval, is estimated.

The server station is arranged to maintain an object model thereon representing the central station, and is connectable to the central station to send control signals to the central station in accordance with the object model. The client station comprises a communications manager for establishing a connection with the server station to enable communication between the client station and the server station, thereby enabling the client station to manage the object model maintained on the server. The client station has a memory for storing a portion of the object model, and a retrieval means for retrieving from the server station, as required by the client station, additional objects of the object model for expanding the portion of the object model stored in the memory.
