Abstract:
Mobile terminal handoff control is provided for point to multipoint (PMP) connections in Mobile ATM networks. Special issues for the handoff control in all three types of PMP connections are taken care of, including cross over switch discovery and handoff path re-routing. A protocol for a PMP connections signaling mechanism is presented, which works with all three types of PMP connections and has a lossless control function. The PMP connection tree topology is protected.
Abstract:
A system and method for browsing, retrieving, and recommending information from a collection uses multi-modal features of the documents in the collection, as well as an analysis of users' prior browsing and retrieval behavior. The system and method are premised on various disclosed methods for quantitatively representing documents in a document collection as vectors in multi-dimensional vector spaces, quantitatively determining similarity between documents, and clustering documents according to those similarities. The system and method also rely on methods for quantitatively representing users in a user population, quantitatively determining similarity between users, clustering users according to those similarities, and visually representing clusters of users by analogy to clusters of documents.

Abstract:
An umbrella stand having an outer decorative surface is provided, for use with a large, outdoor-style umbrella. The outer surface of the stand is formed on an exterior shell that is fabricated out of a corrosion-resistant material, such as Aluminum. A weighted mass is attached to an inner surface of the exterior shell, thereby protecting the less corrosive-resistant material from the elements. Additionally, the weighted mass is attached to the exterior shell piece in a manner that none of the mass rests upon the surface on which the umbrella stand rests. In this manner, only the corrosion-resistant, decorative piece touches the support surface, preventing any discoloration that may occur upon the surface of the weighted mass from staining the area on which the umbrella stand rests—frequently a concrete surface.

Abstract:
A handoff control process in a wireless ATM network replaces an old communications connection with a new communication connection. In order to guarantee that no data is lost during the replacement process, an ATM cell level mechanism is used to re-schedule the buffering and transmitting of data streams of the virtual channels (VCs) to be handed-off. In addition, this mechanism is transparent to user applications. The present invention performs three fundamental cell level scheduling functions. The first function is to mark and redirect cell transmission with operation and maintenance (OAM) cells. The second function is to disable and buffer cell transmission until the new path is connected. The third function is to enable cell transmission, starting with the buffered cells across the connected new path.
