Abstract:
Formaldehyde is removed by distillation from reaction solutions containing a methlolated alkanal which was obtained from the reaction of formaldehyde with an alkanal which has at least one acidic hydrogen atom &agr; to the carbonyl function or from the reaction of a 2-alkylacrolein or acrolein with water and formaldehyde, by a process in which this reaction was carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of organic amine. The process permits the improved removal of formaldehyde from the reaction mixture and furthermore facilitates the hydrogenation of the alkanals thus obtained to give polyols.
Abstract:
A process for greatly improving the color index of polyhydric alcohols, especially trimethylolpropane, by hydrogenation comprises using, in the hydrogenation, an alcohol which has already been purified by distillation. The catalysts used are those conventionally employed in hydrogenations, preferably copper, nickel, palladium or ruthenium catalysts.

The invention provides novel mepiquat plant growth regulator compositions which have improved hygroscopicity and corrosion characteristics. The novel mepiquat plant growth regulator compositions of the invention can be readily prepared from technical mepiquat chlorid inter alia by electrochemical ion exchange processes or by quaternization of N-methylpiperidine with dimethylcarbonate as starting material.

A process for removing water and ammonia from benzophenone imine reactor effluents resulting from the catalytic reaction of benzophenones of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, have the meaning stated in the specification and wherein ammonia is distilled off from effluents and wherein water is either distilled off from the effluents over removed non-distillatively.
