A system and method for a mobile device to learn information about the access networks within its neighborhood is disclosed. In certain embodiments, information about networks in a neighborhood of a particular network is stored in a database associated with a dynamic host configuration protocol server. Periodic beacons of an access point of at least one network identified in the database are received by mobile stations. One of the mobile stations requests capability and configuration information of one or multiple target networks or all networks in the database. The requested capability and configuration information is provided to the mobile station.

A method and an apparatus for providing service are provided. A method of providing service by a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) device includes transmitting a request for a first authentication to a Network Security Capability (NSEC), the request for the first authentication including an identifier of the M2M device, performing an Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) authentication with the NSEC, and generating, if the first authentication is successful, a secret key using at least one of a Master Session Key (MSK) and the identifier of the M2M device.

The method includes receiving an erase request containing a first M2M-Erase-Token from an M2M Authentication Server (MAS) or an M2M Service Bootstrapping Function (MSBF), processing the erase request based on the first M2M-Erase-Token or a local policy of the device or the gateway, and sending an erase response containing a second M2M-Erase-Token to the MAS or the MSBF.

An authentication and authorization method/apparatus, in a network system which includes a mobile terminal and a home authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) server, includes: receiving a network access service request signal from the mobile terminal; forwarding the received network access service request signal to the home AAA server which corresponds to the network access service request signal; receiving a service list corresponding to the network access service request signal; and sending a network access service authorization signal to the mobile terminal when the service authorization of the mobile terminal is verified based on the received service list. The single network access service authorization is used for subsequent service authorizations so that the service delay due to the AAA protocol exchanges can be reduced. Delivery of the service list accompanied by an automatic security key generation mechanism achieves local authentication and authorization of local services without involving the home AAA server.
