Disclosed is a space-time coding apparatus and method to flexibly adjust diversity/multiplexing orders in a multiple-antenna system. The transmitting apparatus for the multiple-antenna system includes a space-time code controller, an encoder, a demultiplexer, and a space-time encoder. The space-time code controller generates space-time codes by determining bases according to a multiplexing order required by a receiver. The encoder modulates and encodes data destined for the receiver in accordance with a predetermined modulation level. The demultiplexer demultiplexes data received from the encoder in order to transmit the data through at least one antenna. The space-time encoder space-time-codes the demultiplexed data using the space-time codes.

A Base Station (BS) supporting a plurality of communication service modes allocates communication resources for each of the plurality of communication service modes according to a ratio determined in accordance with a communication service mode preferred by a terminal. The BS transmits a combination of resources allocated for each of the plurality of communication service modes to the terminal. The communication service mode preferred by the terminal is determined using at least one of channel condition of the terminal, moving velocity, preferred communication mode, required performance, billing system, and user preference.

The method includes transmitting a ranging sequence to a relay station; receiving an added signal of a reference sequence of the relay station and the ranging sequence, from the relay station; performing a correlation operation on each of the ranging sequence and the reference sequence in the added signal; estimating a time difference between the ranging sequence and the reference sequence depending on the correlation operation; and transmitting the signal to the relay station taking the time difference into account.

The base station generates the frame and transmits the generated frame to a mobile station. The frame includes separate broadcast channels for the respective physical channels. A position, in the frame, of a first broadcast channel for a physical channel capable of supporting a mobile station having the worst channel state is fixed in all of transmission frames. The first broadcast channel includes positional information of the remaining broadcast channels except for the first broadcast channel. The mobile station detects only an address of a broadcast channel for a physical channel allocated thereto from the first broadcast channel among broadcast channels belonging to the frame.

A method and apparatus for allocating a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) resource in a relay-based wireless communication system are provided. The method includes receiving relay link resource information, determining whether a current link is a multi-hop link by using the relay link resource information, and if the current link is the multi-hop link, allocating a corresponding relay link resource as the P2P resource by determining a serving station. Accordingly, P2P communication can be achieved without having to use additional P2P-dedicated resources.
