摘要： An improved retainer for surgical sutures is provided which includes a suture retaining compartment comprising a suture winding panel with the panel having a pair of holding panels foldably connected to longitudinal edges of the suture winding panel. The holding panels are foldably connected to the winding panel by at least three gussets formed at the edges of the suture winding panel. The gussets at the ends of the foldable connection prevent frictional compression of the wound suture at the corners of the retaining compartment, and the central gussets or gussets engender a convex curvature to the holding panels, thereby creating a low friction volumetric compartment which retains the suture in place. The suture retainer also includes a needle holding means mounted at the intended location of the needle. In illustrated embodiments of the present invention the holding means is angularly disposed with respect to the longitudinal dimension of the retainer to afford ease of needle withdrawal, and in some embodiments the holding means is located on a foldable needle park panel. In some embodiments the retainer includes an insert against which the suture is wound. This insert provides several features, including preventing snagging of the suture on the needle holding means during suture withdrawal, and protection of the needle point. The insert may also include a flap to prevent the suture from snagging on a corner of the insert during withdrawal.

摘要： A suture package having a shallow polymer tray for holding an armed suture has a substantially flat floor area, an exterior surface of which defines at least a portion of a rear surface of the package. A front cover forms a front surface of the package and a needle park is disposed on the floor area for holding a surgical needle of the armed suture. The floor area has a window therethrough proximate the needle park. The front cover terminates proximate the needle park to provide an access opening to the needle. The window and the access opening permit the needle to be grasped by a needle holder and to be withdrawn from the package. Because the package has an opening on both the front and rear surfaces for viewing and removing the needle, curved needles may be stored therein in a conventional orientation, i.e., to serve right-handed physicians while at the same time accommodating dispensing from the rear to provide a suitable needle orientation for use by left-handed surgeons.

摘要： Suture dispensers for retaining armed sutures are disclosed. The dispenser disclosed is comprised of two flat panels of material that each have a central opening. A needle park is provided so that the needle is visible in and accessible though the central openings. In preferred embodiments, the needle park is made of a thin sheet of clear material. Several alternate needle park designs are also disclosed. The two panels are preferably locked together using edge locks in the form of corresponding slits and tabs formed on the panels themselves. In addition to being inexpensive, easy to manufacture and easy to fill, the disclosed dispensers is much thinner than current designs and thus requires less storage and shipping space. Methods of loading dispensers are also disclosed. By winding the suture material in a flat spiral around a set of winding pins, the disclosed dispensers can be easily and accurately filled, yet the resulting coiled suture can be withdrawn via the central openings without twisting or kinking the suture material. In certain embodiments pressure on the central portion of the panels permits winding a spiral without the need for a central winding core. In other embodiments, pins are used to both align the panels and provide a winding guide for the suture material.

摘要： A molded two-piece suture package is disclosed which encloses and defines an oval channel in which sutures may be wound. The oval channel has two semicircular end sections connected by straight side sections. An opening in the channel is provided at the juncture of a straight section and an end section, permitting sutures to be withdrawn from the channel at the end of a straight section. In a preferred embodiment the interior wall of the channel is formed by alternating engaging sections formed in the respective package pieces. To prevent the wrapped suture from becoming entrapped when the two pieces are engaged, the top and bottom of the channel is alternately raised and lowered in alignment with the alternating wall sections, causing the wound suture to bridge those areas where it may become entrapped between the mating package pieces. Entrapment of the suture end at the outside of the channel is prevented by alternately recessing the outer wall of the channel. Flexible molded needle parks are also disclosed for the package.

摘要： Apparatus for collecting body fluid utilizes a condition of negative pressure in a chamber for drawing body fluid from an area of a wound at a relatively constant flow rate. The apparatus includes a piston assembly movable in a housing from a first to a second position under forces of atmospheric pressure acting on the piston assembly. The apparatus further comprises an assembly for enabling operation of the piston assembly including at least one cylinder and piston movable therein by pulling on a hand gripping element attached to the piston to develop a partial vacuum in the cylinder. The piston assembly includes a diaphragm which is movable for maintaining the chamber sealed except through a port adapted for receipt of a tube connecting with said wound. The evacuator apparatus may be reused by emptying body fluid from the chamber and reenabling the piston assembly.
