An ion current sensing device for an internal combustion engine is able to accurately sense an ion current generated between electrodes of a spark plug during combustion of a mixture even when the electrodes have been smeared by carbon or other combustion products deposited or accumulated thereon. A power source 14 supplies a bias voltage to the electrodes of the spark plug. An ion current sensing resistor 15 is connected between the elecrodes of the spark plug and the power source for sensing an ion current as generated between the electrodes of the spark plug each time a mixture in the combustion chamber is combusted. A comparator 11 compares the voltage across the ion current sensing resistor with a reference voltage and generates an output signal when the voltage is higher than the reference voltage. A filter comprising a capacitor 22 and a resistor 23 is connected between the ion current sensing resistor and the comparator for passing only AC components of the voltage across the ion current sensing resistor to the comparator while blocking a DC component thereof.

An assembling structure of a Hall-effect sensor device suitable to be used as a crankshaft angle sensor of an automotive internal combustion engine is disclosed. The device comprises: a frame of a resin material which includes a box-shaped accommodating portion opening downward, and a magnetic flux guide holder opposing a side wall of the accommodating portion across a predetermined gap through which a magnetic shutter passes; a Hall IC disposed within the accommodating portion of the frame; a position determining means--such as a resilient member functioning with positioning planar surface portions formed on the interior surfaces of the accommodating portion of the frame, or a holder plate made of a press-formed stainless steel plate having a plurality of engaging projections or claws--for determining the relative position of the Hall IC with respect to the frame; a first magnetic flux guide disposed in the accommodating portion of the frame; a second magnetic flux guide held by the magnetic flux guide holder of the frame; and a permanent magnet adhered to the second magnetic flux guide so as to oppose the Hall IC across the predetermined gap through which the magnetic flux shutter is translated to cause the variation of the magnetic flux that passes through the Hall IC.

An angle measuring device for measuring the turning angle of a crankshaft in an internal combustion engine in order to control, for example, the ignition timing thereof comprises: a rotating disc which is adapted to rotate in synchronization with a crankshaft and which has a plurality of slits formed along the circumference thereof; light-emitting elements arranged in the vicinity of the rotating disc; light-receiving elements adapted to receive light emitted from the light-emitting elements through the slits of the rotating disc; and a signal processing circuit adapted to process signals output from the light-receiving elements and including: a semiconductor substrate, a plurality of islands formed on the surface of the semiconductor substrate from diffusion layers, a protective-resistor element formed in one of the islands and connected to the light-emitting means, and separation layers separating the island on which the protective-resistor element is formed from the other islands, no other elements being formed on the island on which the protective-resistor element is formed.
