    Abstract: A process for making carbon black comprises forming an annular outer layer of combustion-supporting gas rotating about the axis of a cylindrical furnace chamber, flowing an annular cylinder of hydrocarbon gas inside this outer layer, and flowing a core of combustion-supporting gas inside the annular cylinder, and burning the gas mixture to form carbon black from the combustion at each face of the annular cylinder. Hydrocarbon gas, e.g. methane which may be preheated, enters with air through tangential burners 15 in the side of cylindrical reaction chamber 10 of the type described in Specification 621,031, having steel shell 13 enclosing insulating layer 12 and refractory, e.g. sillimanite or fused alumina, lining 11; the gas/air mixture is introduced in increasing amount until a carbon black-forming temperature is reached. Hydrocarbon gas, e.g. methane or vaporized gas oil, with or without air, which may have been heated to 2000 DEG F. in preheater 32 is then fed into the reactor 10 through annular passage 18 or alternatively through a plurality of inlets arranged in a ring about the centre of the reactor inlet wall. At the same time air which may also be preheated in 32 is passed into reactor 10 through porous refractory tube 16 which may be perforated and may alternatively p have an open downstream end. Once the reaction is proceeding, the hydrocarbon gas supplied to tangential burners 15 may be cut off. Temperatures may be taken through 20 and the carbon black in the effluent may be washed down by water from spray 14.
