A surface protective film which can be easily peeled off from an adhesive silicone rubber composition layer, is free of a plasticizer or the like which may have an adverse effect on adhesion of the adhesive silicone rubber composition layer to a semiconductor chip or semiconductor chip attaching portion, and has no adverse effect on thickness uniformity or surface flatness of the adhesive silicone rubber composition layer, and a process for producing the same. More specifically, a surface protective film for protecting an adhesive silicone rubber composition layer (C), comprising a base film (A) coated, at least on one side, with a cellulose-based resin layer (B) having an SP value of 21.0 to 29.0(MPa)1/2, determined by the Fedors method, and process for producing the same.

A normally tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive tape or sheet comprises a pressuresensitive adhesive united to one surface of a cellulosic flexible backing film, and united to the other surface of said backing a continuous mirror coating, that is, a smooth glossy and fully transparent coating, of a substantially wax- and plasticizer-free composition in which there is present at least a major proportion of at least one of the following materials: polyvinyl alcohol, carboxy methyl-, hydroxy ethyl-, methyl- and nitro-cellulose, glue, casein, or a lower alkyl methacrylate polymer having not more than six carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, and, applied directly to the continuous mirror coating, resinous binder ink impressions. The backing film may be of cellulose acetate or regenerated cellulose, which may be plasticized, e.g. with a liquid ester such as dibutyl dioctyl or dimethoxyethyl phthalate glycerine or a glycerine substitute such as a water-soluble glycol, or combinations of films with strands, e.g. of cellulose acetate, fibres, fibre webs, e.g. paper, or non-woven fabric. The backing film may be primed, e.g. with a mixture, of butadieneacrylonitrile and butadiene-styrene as in Specification 689,667, rubber latex, synthetic rubber latex-polyvinyl alcohol as in Specification 554,019, rubber rosin, such as a mixture of latex crepe rubber and pine pitch or wood rosin, prior to coating with the pressuresensitive adhesive. Specified adhesives contain crepe rubber, dehydrogenated rosin, smoked rubber, butadiene-styrene, phenol modified terpene resin, oil modified phenolic resin, hydrogenated rosin glyceride, alkylated polyhydroxy phenol, lecithin, lanolin, hydrogenated coumarone indene resin, fillers, e.g. zinc oxide, aluminium hydrate, and titanium dioxide, antioxidants and pigments. The mirror coating may also contain polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral and tri - ethylene - glycol - di - 2 - ethyl-butyrate. The ink may be based on a binder such as shellac, ethyl cellulose, and nitrocellulose, and may be dissolved in lower aliphatic alcohols or esters containing not more than six carbon atoms in the chain.

Single coatings.-In adhesive strips of paper or fabric coated with gum or rubber, the side of the material not coated with adhesive is coated with a cellulose ester, mixed ester or ether-ester, of a higher fatty acid. Unrolling of a roll of the material is thus facilitated, as the sticky surface does not adhere to the reverse side of the strip. The adhesive power of the gum or rubber is not affected. Cellulose laurate is stated to be particularly suitable for the coating.
