When an open-malfunction occurs, the coolant temperature becomes considerably different from that normally expected for times at which the thermostat is expected to be closed. When a closure-malfunction occurs, the coolant temperature becomes considerably different from that normally expected for times at which the thermostat is expected to be opened. Alternatively, the malfunction may be detected from the difference between the engine side coolant temperature and the radiator side coolant temperature.

A fan assembly (10) which incorporates variable pitched blades (152), is driven by the engine of a vehicle and is used in cooling the engine. A control system (248) is provided which is responsive to at least one signal representative of an operating parameter of the engine and a second signal indicative of a desired cooling requirement to establish an efficient pitch for the blades of the fan assembly. In one embodiment, the speed of the engine is sensed and used in combination with a cooling requirement signal developed by the engine control module (205) to regulate the pitch of the fan assembly. In a second embodiment, engine charge air temperature and coolant temperature signals are utilized in establishing the desired pitch. Furthermore, fuzzy logic controls (290) can be utilized to anticipate the cooling needs of the engine based on variations in the overall dynamic system as derived from information available through the engine control module.

After the engine is started, the ECU calculates, over time, an engine heat generation quantity, an estimated cooling water temperature or the like on the basis of various engine operating condition parameters, such as cooling water temperature, intake temperature, engine revolution speed, amount of intake air, and the like. After the elapse of a predetermined time, the ECU compares the estimated cooling water temperature and the cooling water temperature actually detected by the water temperature sensor. If the relationship therebetween meets a predetermined condition, the ECU determines whether there is an abnormality in the operating condition of the thermostat and/or the cooling water temperature sensor.

A method for comprehensive integrated control of an internal combustion engine, such as a compression-ignition engine or a natural gas spark-ignition engine, utilizes an electronic control module which includes an idle shutdown feature to limit the amount of time the engine is allowed to idle when the vehicle is stationary and the ambient air temperature is between calibratable limits. The system and method permit extended idle periods when the ambient air temperature is below a lower limit or above an upper limit to allow operation of the vehicle heating or cooling system, respectively. A selectable operator override permits engine idling for a calibratable period of time when requested by the operator, such as by momentarily depressing the accelerator pedal. The present invention also includes a system and method for estimating the ambient air temperature based on various other standard engine information, such as engine speed, cooling fan operation, engine oil temperature, and manifold air temperature or air inlet temperature. Ambient air temperature estimation is utilized when a direct sensor is not installed, not configured, or an error is detected. Furthermore, the present invention includes improved cooling fan control to anticipate temperature increases due to operation of a transmission retarder, and imposing a minimum torque requirement for cooling fan operation resulting from high coolant temperature.

In one example, engine coolant system malfunction is indicated based on an engine coolant temperature inference model, whereas in another example engine coolant system malfunction is indicated based on a time-based monitor, where the inference model is enabled at ambient temperatures above a predetermined threshold, and where the time-based monitor is enabled at ambient temperatures below the predetermined threshold. In this way, accurate engine coolant system diagnosis may be accomplished under ambient temperature conditions wherein the engine coolant temperature inference model may be compromised.
