Lubrication oil utilized in the press flywheel bearing is ported and communicated into the clutch brake unit for use therein, eliminating the use of two separate lubrication or oil transport systems. A hydrostatic oil bearing on the brake/clutch actuator member (actuation plate) eliminates the use or need of an anti-friction bearing between the actuator member and the brake and clutch members.

The oil cooling system for the drive unit feeds oil to the outer radial or circumferential portion of the drive and returns oil for the central portion of the drive. The reverse flow of oil provides a more consistent supply of cooling oil to remove heat and lubricate the various components of the drive unit to significantly improve the operating performance of the drive.

The clutch control valve operates the clutch by supplying pressurized air to the clutch. The brake control valve operates the brake by supplying pressurized hydraulic fluid to the brake. A clutch and brake system for starting and stopping a power press uses hydraulically actuated brake and clutch mechanisms. To start the press, the brake is hydraulically released while the clutch is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full clutch torque level. The clutch is maintained at that intermediate torque level until the present drive shaft has attained its substantially full speed, and is then increased to the full clutch torque level. To stop the press, the clutch is hydraulically disengaged while the brake is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full brake torque level. The brake is maintained at this intermediate torque level until the press drive shaft has substantially stopped, at which time the brake torque is increased to the full brake torque level.

A safety brake for use on presses that provides a positive stop which is positioned so that its braking surfaces will be engaged if the press overtravels its normal home position due to failure of the standard clutch and brake system of the press. The braking surfaces of the emergency brake are moved to a released position when the press is energized to begin a cycle of its operation. Once the released braking surfaces have passed by each other during the normal cycle of press operation, they are returned to their braking positions so as to preclude overtravel of the press past its home position to any substantial degree if the conventional brake of the press should fail.

A brake assembly for large mechanical presses of the type which employ large gears and operate at relatively high speeds. The brake assembly is especially adapted to reduce noises emanating from the brake housing of such presses due to sudden shocks and stresses placed on the mechanical gearing and drive means of the press when the reciprocating slide of the press delivers its power stroke for performing work functions on a workpiece supported on the bed of the press. The brake assembly and the clutch of the press are coupled to the main driveshaft of the press, and the brake assembly may comprise an integral unit with the clutch or it may be a separate unit.
