A binding system, employing a first plastic elongated strip with spaced integral studs and a second plastic elongated strip having similarly spaced apertures and recesses, is provided which resists impact forces caused by dropping a bound book. A first fixed spacing of studs is provided along a mid-span portion of the first strip and a second fixed smaller spacing of studs provided at both end portions of the first strip which reinforces the end portions against stud breakage or extrusion caused by impact forces. In the preferred embodiment, the three end studs at each end of the strip are spaced at a second fixed spacing distance stud center-to-center of only one-half the first fixed spacing at the long mid-span portion of the strip. In another embodiment, a generally second fixed spacing of one-third the mid-span spacing with the at least two of the end portion studs being staggered from the center longitudinal axis of the strip is shown. An additional embodiment includes one or more integral studs of the end portions of the strip having a substantially greater cross-sectional area than the studs in the mid-span portion of the strip. In each embodiment, the binding is end reinforced against impact forces.

One type of bookbinding strip consists of a male strip with plural flexible studs projecting therefrom and a female strip with complementary holes and grooves in the outer surface thereof extending from each hole. The studs are inserted through holes in the punched paper, then through the holes in the female strip. The present invention compresses the strips toward each other with the paper therebetween and then, upon manual actuation of a lever, causes blocks carrying rollers to bend 90.degree. the portion of the studs projecting beyond the female strip, causing these portions to snap into the grooves. Since the grooves on each end of the strip extend toward the middle of the strip, two blocks are used, each moving inward toward the center upon actuation of the lever.

An apparatus and cartridge for use in binding prepunched sheets into a booklet using curled-finger ring-type edge binders. The binders include an opening tool which is drawn through the binder for spreading curled binder finger from the binder spine to form a document receiving gap. Binder/tool combinations are carried in the cartridge which includes a binding position or slot. The cartridge is to be positioned in an apparatus having a recessed base for receiving the cartridge and a cover which includes a paper receiving slot. The base defines a slot for alignment with the cartridge binding position slot. In the opened position, the terminus of the cover slot is aligned with the base slot. When the cartridge is in position and the cover opened, a booklet can be formed at the binding position by a binder being opened, apertured paper deposited in the cover slot and binder, and removal of the opening tool to permit the binder to close on the apertured paper. In an alternative embodiment, various binder guiding elements, such as a well, upstanding ribs, and a ledge are defined by the base itself so as to eliminate the use of the cartridge.

For convenient packaging of plastic bookbinding strips, cassettes are provided. The end edges of each strip are received in channels formed in opposed side rails. The rails engage adjacent either end the depending legs of transverse spacer bars. The spacer bars have plural sockets to engage projections on the upper ends of the legs so that the spacing between side rails may be varied to accommodate strips of different lengths--e.g., 81/2 inches, 11 inches, etc. Different length legs may be used to accommodate different length studs formed on the strips. By eliminating the legs entirely, flat female binding strips may be packaged in the cassette. A detent is provided in the ends of the rails preventing removal of strips until the detent is bent out of position. The cassette is especially useful in equipment which mechanically assembles punched sheets and strips preparatory to binding a book in a binding machine.

A strip binding system is provided wherein the elements to be bound are held in compression by pulling from below so that no binding bar is required. The binding posts are of a thermoplastic material but the binding strips themselves can be of a different plastic.

A copying machine is provided with a sheet stapling device for both automatically fastening together in a corner area a bundle of sheets successively printed in the copying machine and fastening together a bundle of sheets manually inserted in an externally accessible opening formed in the side of the stapling device. Preferably, the opening is formed by an elongated slot which extends to the operating side of the copying machine and which coincides with the opening through which sheets printed in the copying machine are discharged from the stapling device. A bundle of sheets can be inserted in the opening so that any edge part is under the stapling means. Thus, the inserted bundle can be stapled at different places along any edge. The opening is provided with two detectors to determine when a bundle of sheets inserted manually is correctly positioned under the stapling device and to initiate the stapling action.

A binding element adapted for binding an apertured stack of sheets into a book. The binding element comprises a first binding strip from which project a plurality of spaced studs adapted to be positioned through the apertures; and a second binding strip having a plurality of openings sized to freely receive the studs to afford positioning the second strip over ends of the studs projecting beyond the stack of sheets. Blocks on the second strip can then be pressed into the openings to forcefully engage the studs extending through the openings with teeth along the walls of the openings so that the teeth will indent the studs and maintain the position of the studs in the second strip. The ends of the studs projecting beyond the second strip can then be removed.

An improvement on commercial machines which bind documents using plastic strips. The punch mechanism may be automatically actuated when the paper sheets are properly aligned on a punch platen or actuated manually at the user's discretion. Distance of the holes from the edges of the sheets may be indexed. The binding mechanism improvements include interchangeability of height of the pressure bar and speed of binding mechanism, depending on thickness of book to be bound or as selected by user, means for automatically starting the motor drive of the binding mechanism and pressure bar when it has been manually placed or moved onto the document to be bound, automatic lifting of the pressure bar when the binding cycle has been completed, a resistance-heated knife construction which reaches operating temperature more rapidly, controls and minimizes the heated knife temperature fluctuations, maintains a more uniform temperature profile of the knife, improvements in the mounting of the timing cams of the machine and improved means for securing and positioning the cooling and forming fingers in place. In a modification, means is provided for binding a "wrap-around" cover which extends rearward of the spine of the book and then is folded forward around the binding strips for the book. The means comprises a removable backstop for the spine edges of the sheets to be bound, a platen and roller to support the lowermost of the wrap-around covers and a rack to support the uppermost of the wrap-around covers during the binding procedure. The knife structure is modified to avoid interference with the modified means.

Device for interlocking a stack of writing material having perforations formed therein along a margin thereof, the perforations formed in the writing material being aligned in the stack thereof so as to form respective through-bores extending from opposite marginal surfaces of the stack that are disposed adjacent to and on both sides of a back surface of the stack, includes two binding strips of identical construction, each of the binding strips having a first portion engageable with the back of the writing-material stack for covering at least part thereof, and a second portion engageable with and covering a respective one of the opposite marginal surfaces of the stack, each of the binding strips further having stringing rods and sleeves extending from the respective second portion thereof, the rods and sleeves being disposed in mutually alternating sequence and having a mutual spacing corresponding to the spacing of the aligned holes formed in the stack of writing material, the rods being formed with outer detents along the length thereof and the sleeves being formed with corresponding inner detents along the length thereof, the rods of each of the two binding strips being lockingly engageable in the sleeves of the other of the two binding strips by the detents thereof within the respective through-bores formed in the stack of writing material.

An end sheet, which may be reinforced with fabric, paper or other material, is bound along with the pages of the book and the corresponding end sheet for the opposite end of the book by means of plastic strip retainers as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,730,560. The end sheet is secured to the inside of the cover of the case by adhesive. In preferred forms of the invention, at least one portion of the end sheet extends from under the spine edge of the plastic strip and folds outside the outer surface of the strip. In this form, the cover lies flat when opened. In other preferred forms, the end sheet extends from under the plastic strip in both directions.
