    Abstract: The invention relates to an RDS radio unit implementing a user friendly algorithm for automatic frequency change without inconveniencing the user with interruptions. A timer is used to delay the start of searches for a better frequency. The RDS radio unit comprises: a radio tuner (2) tunable to radio frequencies; a control unit (3) capable of controlling the radio tuner and monitoring received signal strength on a frequency to which the the radio tuner is tuned, storage means (4) for receiving and storing a list of alternative frequencies; timer means (5) capable of timing a number of operations. The control unit is adapted to perform a search for a better channel frequency than an original frequency with a program matching the original frequency only when a first time T1 has elapsed, since the occurrence of an alternative frequency update request or a detection of received signal strength below a predetermined threshold. The present invention also relates to a telecommunication device (1) incorporating such an RDS radio unit.

    Abstract: A timing signal is regenerated from an encoded digital signal having a data clock frequency Rb in a receiver using a predetermined sample rate Fs, wherein the data clock period 1/Rb is not an integer multiple of the predetermined sample period 1/Fs. The method comprises generating an input pulse signal in response to the encoded digital signal. Each of the input pulse signals is accumulated in a predetermined delay element which stores an accumulated value, wherein the predetermined delay element is in a delay loop including N delay elements each having a respective accumulated value. The accumulated values are circulated within the delay loop by shifting at each of the sample periods according to a predetermined shift sequence, the predetermined shift sequence including a plurality of single shifts and at least one other shift size to provide a number of shifts N+δ during a cycle of N sample periods. A synchronization pulse is generated in response to the accumulated values and a predetermined threshold. A counter is operated to output the timing signal in response to the predetermined sample rate Fs, the counter having a variable counter period according to a predetermined counter sequence. The variable counter period has an average over time corresponding to the data clock period 1/Rb. The counter is reset in response to the synchronization pulse (if synchronization becomes necessary).

    Abstract: A wireless communications device includes a receiver to receive a broadcast signal transmitted by a commercial broadcast radio station, memory, and a controller. The memory stores user-defined information that identifies multimedia content that the user is interested in recording. The broadcast signal includes multimedia content such as a song, for example, that may be rendered to the user over a speaker of the device. The broadcast signal also includes information identifying the multimedia content being transmitted. Upon receipt of the broadcast signal, the controller compares the received information identifying the multimedia content to user-defined information. If the comparison yields a match, the controller records the received multimedia content for the user. The controller may be configured to temporarily store the received multimedia content in a temporary buffer pending the results of the comparison.

    Abstract: A method and system are provided in which a user is enabled to create a preferred playlist of the user's favorite songs or types of video presentations. An input device allows the user to add or delete items or key words of a song title or video presentation to or from the favorites list. In an exemplary video application, a user is enabled to indicate by using a digital video recorder, a specific type of broadcast such as “Sports” or “Basketball”. In an exemplary radio application, the user is enabled to list songs, or key words of the title if the user is unsure of the exact title, on the preferred playlist. Video signals or songs playing on several channels or stations are monitored and when a listed video type or song having the input key words from the user's favorites list begins to play on a station, the song and the full song title which is acquired from the received broadcast data, are automatically saved to memory for subsequent retrieval and playing by the user. In one example, the user is also enabled to add video types or songs to the favorites list by pressing a single “ADD” button at any time while a type of video or a favorite song is currently being played. The song then being played together with the title of the song or video presentation are then saved to memory for subsequent retrieval and playing.
