The first projection optical unit is in an almost telecentric relationship with respect to the image display element side and the first enlarged image side, and the first enlarged image is formed at the image display element side, rather than at the second projection optical unit.

    摘要: The present invention provides a technique which can enhance contrast and brightness of a displayed image in a projection image display apparatus. According to the present invention, as a polarization splitting unit polarization-splitting incident light or exiting light upon/from a light valve, F number of a polarization splitting plane formed between prism members in an axial direction in which an incident angle of light is small (Y-axis direction) is smaller than F number in an axial direction in which an incident angle is large (X′-axis direction or Z′-axis direction) so that the light is incident so as to be tilted in the axial direction in which the incident angle is small. This can suppress an amount of change in incident angle of light upon a polarization splitting plane to a small value and can increase an amount of incident light upon the polarization splitting plane in the state that polarization-splitting performance is maintained in the best range.

    摘要: A projection type color display device capable of achieving both the color balance and higher luminous flux amount (high luminance) of enlarged on-screen images is disclosed. The device includes a white light source, light flux separating unit, image display elements, photosynthetic unit, and a projection lens device. The light intensities of light fluxes of three primary colors of red, green and blue as split by the light flux separating unit are modulated by the image display elements which are provided in a way corresponding to respective ones and then synthesized together by the photosynthetic unit for enlarged projection onto a screen by the projection lens device. During red image displaying, a red image signal is input to the red image display element while performing modulation by the blue image display element based on a signal obtained by adding to a blue image signal a signal with its amplitude being 1/n times the amplitude of the red image signal.

    摘要: A technique according to the present invention allows a projection-type image display system to suppress the temperature rise of the polarization split devices and secure high image quality. Polarization split means has a polarization split device arranged in a medium with a refractive index larger than 1. The polarization split device has a polarization split surface on which a diffractive grating structure is formed to polarize and split light. An air layer is formed in contact with the polarization split surface. In a projection type image display apparatus or an optical unit using this apparatus, light fluxes are polarized and split by the polarization split means before irradiated to light valves and after modulated by the light valves and color composition is made from the polarized and split light fluxes before enlarged and projected by a projection lens unit.
