A color image transmitting method for transmitting a color image composed of a color image portion and a binary image portion is disclosed. Data about the color image portion and data about the binary portion are separated from each other by the positional data so as properly to be compressed or encoded respectively. The data about the color image portion, data about the binary image portion and positional data about one or both of the two image portions are successively transmitted so that the color image can efficiently be transmitted.

The server is capable of subjecting image data read in by the copier or obtained from the network to processing for character recognition, coding and translation by a character recognition circuit, image coding/decoding circuit and translating circuit. Furthermore, image data is capable of being generated by a page-description-language interpreter based upon data, which is in the format of page description language, received from the network. Conversely, a character in the image data is capable of being recognized, coded and converted into page description language so that the amount of data sent to the network can be reduced.

Further, by judging the feature of the detected image block, the attribute of the image block can be judged. Document image data entered from a scanner are separated into a plurality of areas by an area separation unit. Attributes are assigned to respective ones of the plurality of partial areas obtained in the area separation unit. For instance, a character area in the main body of text and a character area in a table are examples of area attributes. Each of these attributes is assigned a degree of priority in advance. A character recognition/orientation discrimination unit detects character orientation in each of the plurality of partial areas and discriminates document orientation. The orientation of the document image data is determined based upon the document orientation of each partial area discriminated by the character recognition/orientation discrimination unit and the degree of priority of the attribute assigned to each partial area. Further, first and second recognition units for recognizing characters used in the Japanese and English languages, respectively, are provided, and the image data undergo recognition by each of these recognition units. The recognition rate of each result of recognition is obtained, the recognition rates are judged by a decision unit and one of the results is selected by a selector based upon the judgment made. The selected result of recognition is outputted.

Disclosed is an image interface device connected to a so-called digital copying machine for inputting from and outputting to an external unit, such as a computer system or a communication unit, both multilevel and binary image data. The digital copying machine performs various image processings on the image data output from a scanner for photoelectrically reading an image using a CCD or the like and supplies the processed image data to a printer, such as an ink jet printer, for printing. When the image data is input from the digital copying machine, the multilevel or binary data combined by a multilevel and binary data separating/combining circuit is input through the same data bus controlled by an I/F control circuit. When the multilevel or binary image data is output to the digital copying machine, the data is output through the same data bus, as in the case of inputting the image data. That is, when the multilevel image data is to be output, it is sent from the I/F control circuit to the multilevel and binary data separating/combining circuit and is output as multilevel image data. When the binary image data is to be output, it is output from the multilevel and binary data separating/combining circuit as binary image data.
