Abstract: The magnetic sensor of the invention has an element portion that is elongate, that exhibits magnetoresistive effect and that has a magnetically sensitive axis in a direction of a short axis thereof. The element portion is non-oval and can be arranged in an imaginary ellipse, wherein the imaginary ellipse has a major axis that connects both ends of the element portion with regard to a direction of a long axis thereof to each other and a minor axis that connects both ends of the element portion with regard to a direction of the short axisthereof to each other, as viewed in a direction that is perpendicular both to the short axis and to the long axis of the element portion.

Abstract: A position detection device includes a first magnetic field generation unit for generating a first magnetic field, a second magnetic field generation unit for generating a second magnetic field, and a magnetic sensor. The position of the second magnetic field generation unit relative to the first magnetic field generation unit is variable. The magnetic sensor detects the direction of a target magnetic field at a detection position in a reference plane. The target magnetic field is a composite magnetic field of first and second magnetic field components which are respective components of the first and second magnetic fields parallel to the reference plane. The magnetic sensor includes a magnetoresistive element including a free layer and a magnetization pinned layer. In the reference plane, two directions orthogonal to the magnetization direction of the magnetization pinned layer are each different from both of directions of the first and second magnetic field components.

Abstract: An angle sensor includes a first to a fourth detection unit and an angle detection unit. Each of the first to the fourth detection unit generates two detection signals. The first to the fourth detection unit are arranged in a positional relationship that establishes predetermined phase relationships among the detection signals they generate. The angle detection unit performs operations using the detection signals to generate a first and a second signal in which an error component corresponding to a fifth or higher-order harmonic and an error component corresponding to a harmonic of the order other than the fifth order are lower than those in the detection signals. The angle detection unit then calculates a detected angle value on the basis of the first and the second signal.
