A vehicle control device applied to a vehicle including an internal combustion engine and an electrically heated catalyst which is warmed by applying a current, and includes a catalyst carrier supporting a catalyst and a carrier retention unit that retains the catalyst carrier and has an electrical insulation property. The vehicle control device includes an insulation resistance determination unit which determines whether or not an insulation resistance of the carrier retention unit decreases to a value equal to or lower than a predetermined value, and an applying current prohibition unit which prohibits applying the current to the electrically heated catalyst when the insulation resistance determination unit determines that the insulation resistance decreases to the value equal to or lower than the predetermined value. Therefore, it is possible to appropriately control of applying the current to the electrically heated catalyst based on the insulation property of the carrier retention unit, and hence it becomes possible to appropriately prevent an electrical leak of the electrically heated catalyst.

The electricity is suppressed from flowing through a case of an electric heating catalyst. The electric heating catalyst comprises a heat generating element which generates heat by applying electricity; a case which accommodates the heat generating element; a mat which is provided between the heat generating element and the case and which insulates the electricity; and an inner tube which is provided on an inner side as compared with the case and on an outer side as compared with the heat generating element and which is supported by the mat while dividing the mat into a part disposed on a case side and a part disposed on a heat generating element side; wherein distances between the inner tube and the case are provided such that the distance is required to support the inner tube at a portion at which the mat exists, and the distance is required to avoid occurrence of any electric discharge between the inner tube and the case at a portion at which the inner tube protrudes from the mat.

A diagnostic apparatus for a fuel storage device has a gas introducing passage for introducing gas from a fuel storage device into an intake passage of an internal combustion engine and a shutoff valve that shuts the gas introducing passage. The diagnostic apparatus detects an amount of fuel component introduced into the intake passage via the gas introducing passage when the shutoff valve is in at least one of an open state and a closed state on the basis of the detected amount of fuel component and, upon detecting the presence of the fuel component in the introduced gas, the apparatus diagnoses that the fuel storage device has a fault.

In an evaporative fuel processing apparatus, a fuel tank and a canister communicate with each other through a vapor passage, and an intake passage of an internal combustion engine and the canister communicates with each other through a purge passage. The evaporative fuel processing apparatus includes an open/close valve which opens or closes the vapor passage, a switching valve which makes the canister open to the atmosphere or isolates the canister from the atmosphere, a booster pump capable of applying pressure to the canister while the switching valve isolates the canister from the atmosphere, a purge control valve which opens or closes the purge passage, and an ECU which controls the open/close valve, the switching valve, the booster pump and the purge control valve.

A fuel vapor feed controlling apparatus of a lean burn internal combustion engine suppresses either one of a rich misfire or a surge when fuel vapor is fed into the engine. A purge controlling unit controls an amount of fuel vapor fed from a fuel reservoir to the engine in response to an operational condition of the engine. A first compensation unit compensates the amount of fuel vapor such that an engine revolution speed of the engine may be identical with a target revolution speed. The purge controlling unit performs a purge control based on a compensation value compensated by the first compensation unit.

In an internal combustion engine in which a throttle valve is substantially fully opened in most of the operating regions such as an in-cylinder injection type internal combustion engine, a technique is provided capable of effectively processing an evaporative fuel while stabilizing a combustion state of the internal combustion engine even in the case that an amount of evaporative fuel generated in a fuel tank or the like is increased. To achieve this technique, a purge amount of evaporative fuel is increased by increasing a differential pressure between an upstream portion and a downstream portion of a purge passage, and the differential pressure between an upstream portion and a downstream portion of a purge passage, and the differential pressure is adjusted in accordance with the combustion state of the internal combustion engine at that time, thereby making it possible to purge the maximum amount of evaporative fuel within a range in which the combustion state is not unstabilized.

A malfunction diagnosis apparatus for an evaporated fuel purge system comprises an evaporated fuel processing unit, an air valve arranged between a canister and the atmosphere wherein, when the air valve is open, the canister communicates with the atmosphere and, when the air valve is closed, the canister is sealed from the atmosphere, means for setting, based on an engine operating condition, a time required to lower a pressure within a least a portion of the evaporated fuel processing unit to a predetermined negative value, means for detecting an atmospheric pressure and means for changing the introduction time of the negative pressure in accordance with the atmospheric pressure. Means are provided for determining whether a failure of the evaporated fuel processing unit has occurred based on a pressure change in the system during a predetermined testing time after the predetermined negative pressure has been introduced into the evaporated fuel processing unit by closing the air valve and opening for the changed introduction time the purge control valve.

An internal combustion engine, wherein fuel vapor adsorbed in a canister (22) is purged into a surge tank (13) through a purge control valve (28). A target value of the fuel vapor rate showing the ratio of the amount of fuel vapor in the purge gas to the amount of fuel injection is stored in advance. At least one of the amount of purge gas or the amount of fuel injection is controlled so that the fuel vapor rate becomes the target value.

A diagnostic apparatus for a fuel vapor treating apparatus closes a breather to shut a purge system valve during purge. While further continuing the purge, the apparatus detects the purge flow thereby caused and a pressure change occurring in the purge system. Based on the purge flow and the pressure change, the space volume in the purge system is estimated. By comparing the estimated space volume and the actual space volume in the purge system, the apparatus determines whether there is a failure or fault in the purge system.
