There is disclosed the preparation of novel compositions comprising complex mixtures of salts of di-(1-benzyl-3-carboxyl1,2-dihydropyridyl-2) ethers, the salts of the corresponding sulfides and polysulfides and the position isomers and other products resulting from the reaction between a 1-benzyl-3carboxy-pyridinium halide and an alkali metal, or ammonium, hydroxide, sulfide or polysulfide. These complex mixtures are particularly suitable for use as brightening agents for the alkaline cyanide zinc plating baths employed for the electrodeposition of zinc, as sequestrants and as stabilizers for plastics and rubbers.

The alkaline zinc electroplating bath of the present invention contains as brightening agent the reaction product of A. POLYETHYLENE IMINE OR POLYPROPYLENE IMINE WITH B. AN AROMATIC ALDEHYDE, C. AMMONIA AND/OR ETHYLENEDIAMINE, OR DIETHYLENE TRIAMINE AND D. EPICHLOROHYDRIN. Due to the addition of said reaction product its cyanide content can be considerably reduced without impairing the brightness of the zinc deposit.

A brightening composition for the lustrous deposit of zinc from alkaline cyanide solutions contains the condensation products formed by reaction of dialdehydes with polyamine salts. The polyamines of the polyamine salts have at least two terminal amine groups on an aliphatic chain. The salt is formed by neutralizing a water soluble acid with the water soluble polyamine. Reaction of the polyamine salt with the dialdehyde produces the novel condensation products.

Aqueous alkaline cyanide zinc electroplating baths and processes are provided in which polyvinyl alcohol or a vinyl alcohol copolymer degraded with periodic acid or an alkali metal periodate is used as a brightener, particularly to give improved plating characteristics at low applied currents. Enhanced zinc plates are obtained when the degraded polyvinyl alcohol is used with other brightening additives, particularly a pyridinium compound having at least one polar substituent.
