    摘要: Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a dual-pole optical communications network is compensated for using an adaptive PMD equalizer. The PMD equalizer may include a number of substantially identical filter modules that provide partial outputs which may be combined to form a PMD compensated output. A constant modulus algorithm (CMA)-based equalizer may track PMD across both poles and generates an error signal. The CMA-based equalizer includes a filter bank, and uses an update algorithm and tap/output adjustments based on a difference between combined tap energies and an index, and feedback from a forward error correction code frame synchronizer.

    摘要: Methods, systems, and devices are described for a low complexity interpolator for use in optical transmission systems. An input receives a digitized version of an optical signal, and provides samples of the received signal to a filter module. The filter module filters the input samples according to a set of filter coefficients provided by a memory. The set of filter coefficients are provided based on the output of a numerically controlled oscillator that provides an output corresponding to an accumulation of partial periods of the first sample rate. Filtered data samples are output to a sample block assembler that receives the data samples, removes filtered data samples where it is indicated that the sample is not valid, and outputs valid filtered data samples at the second sample rate and at a fixed number of samples power output period.

    摘要: In order to appropriately demultiplex the polarization multiplexed BPSK signal without using a training sequence and decreasing the resistance to a frequency offset, an optical receiver includes a coherent optical detection unit receiving an optical signal in which BPSK modulated carrier waves are polarization-multiplexed, performing coherent detection by mixing the received optical signal with local light, and outputting first electrical signals corresponding to the carrier waves; a butterfly FIR filter receiving the first electrical signals and extracting second electrical signals corresponding to each of the carrier waves from the first electrical signals; and a coefficient control unit for calculating a sum of respective phases of the second electrical signals output from the butterfly FIR filter, adaptively controlling tap coefficients of the butterfly FIR filter so that the calculated phase sum may become equal to 0 or π, and outputting tap coefficients after being controlled to the butterfly FIR filter.

    摘要: In an optical transmission system which utilizes polarization multiplexing, a receiver includes an adaptive equalizer which is adjusted at turn-up such that two polarization modes at the equalizer output are time aligned. The adaptive equalizer may be reset in a directed manner in response to an indication that one polarization mode is present at both the first and second outputs. Further, the dominant filters taps of the adaptive equalizer are maintained near a middle of a tap index range. The receiver may also include an interpolation function upstream of the adaptive equalizer and a symbol timing error estimation function that feeds a control signal back to the interpolation function, wherein the interpolation function causes the adaptive equalizer function and symbol timing error estimation function to receive an integer number of samples per symbol.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for simultaneous processing of signals impressed on a horizontal polarization of a light wave and on a vertical polarization of the light wave is provided. In one embodiment, a horizontal polarization pilot tone is impressed on a data signal carried by the horizontal polarization and a vertical polarization pilot tone is impressed on a data signal carried by the vertical polarization. A receiver processes the dual-polarized light wave and converts it to an X channel signal and a Y channel signal. The X and Y channel signals are processed in separate channels to recover a phase and frequency offset between them and a local oscillator. The phase and frequency recovered and frequency de-multiplexed signals are further processed to polarization de-multiplex the data signal carried by the horizontal polarization and the data signal carried by the vertical polarization.

    摘要: A method for determining symbols PSK modulated on an optical carrier includes interfering a first polarization component of the modulated optical carrier and a reference optical carrier in a first optical mixer and interfering the first polarization component of the modulated optical carrier and the reference with a different relative phase in a second optical mixer. The method also includes sampling the interfered carriers from the first optical mixer to produce first digital sampled values and sampling the interfered carriers from the second optical mixer to produce second digital sampled values. The first and second digital sampled values of a sampling period form a first complex sampling value thereof. The method also includes offsetting a phase of a complex signal value corresponding to each first complex sampling value to correct for a phase error caused by a frequency offset between the modulated and reference optical carriers.
