    Abstract: A method (30) of controlling fuel flow in a gas turbine engine. First, detect a surge condition. Set fuel flow demand (Wf_D) proportional to compressor discharge pressure (P30). Detect actual fuel flow (Wf_A). Then apply an enhanced schedule (50) for fuel flow demand (Wf_D) while fuel flow demand (Wf_D) is less than a predefined proportion (k) of actual fuel flow (Wf_A). Also a gas turbine engine (10), fuel flow system (68) and fuel flow control system (76) each implementing the method (30).

    Abstract: An electrical converter (203) having an active diode-clamped multilevel topology is shown. Each clamping diode is connected in antiparallel with a switch (S5A, S5B). The converter comprises polyphase supply phases (A, B, C) each of which are connected via a respective phase leg (401, 402, 403) to dc rails (301, 302) and a dc-link capacitor. The dc-link capacitor includes a plurality of series-connected capacitors (404, 405). A controller is configured to, in response to an event signal, for each phase leg, activate a combination of switches therein to form a pair of parallel conduction paths to a midpoint (406) between two capacitors in the dc-link capacitor, thereby connecting each phase to the same node.

    Abstract: A combustion staging system includes a splitting unit receiving a metered fuel flow and controllably splitting the received flow into pilot and mains flows for injecting at pilot and mains fuel stages performing staging combustor control. Pilot and mains fuel manifolds distribute fuel from the unit, which can select pilot-only and pilot and mains operations. A cooling flow recirculation line provides a cooling flow to the mains manifold during pilot-only operation, and a return section to collect mains manifold cooling flow. A fuel recirculating control valve open position allows the cooling flow to enter a delivery section during pilot-only operation; a shut off position prevents the cooling flow from entering the delivery section during pilot and mains operation. The unit can divert a mains flow portion into the delivery section during pilot and mains operation, the diverted portion re-joining the rest of the mains flow in the mains fuel stages.

    Abstract: An electrical fault detector is shown for installation in electrical network (101) of the type comprising a first voltage source (104) and a second voltage source (107), each of which have a respective positive rail (105,108) connected by a positive concentrator (110) and a respective negative rail (106,109) connected by a negative concentrator (111). The detector comprises an inductor (112) for location in one of: the positive concentrator between the connections of the positive rails thereto, and the negative concentrator between the connections of the negative rails to thereto. The detector also comprises a fault identification device (113) configured to monitor the voltage across the inductor, and generate a fault signal in response to the voltage across the inductor exceeding a threshold.

    Abstract: A gas turbine engine including a compressor, a turbine having one or more stages and a combustor, the combustor being located between the compressor and turbine. The gas turbine engine further includes a bleed from a core defined by a core duct, the core duct surrounding and extending between the turbine and combustor at least. The bleed includes at least one inlet located downstream of the combustor and upstream of at least one of the turbine stages. The turbine is arranged in use to drive the compressor. The bleed is arranged to be controllable in use to selectively bleed air from the core through the inlet and to thereby control the power delivered by the turbine to the compressor.

    Abstract: A fixture for locating a straight edge of a curved surface of a part and holding the part in a fixed position during performance of a machining operation on the straight edge is described. The fixture includes: one or more supports for seating a convex curved surface of the part, one or more detachable end stops arranged to extend in a plane orthogonal to that in which the supports sit and against which, in use, the straight edge can be aligned, and a clamp arranged, in use, to push the convex curved surface against the supports such that the straight edge contacts the supports without obstruction of the straight edge.

    Abstract: A brush seal for sealing a leakage gap in an axial flow path between a relatively higher fluid pressure region and a relatively lower fluid pressure region. The brush seal may comprise an outer housing and an inner housing located at least partially within and configured for radial displacement relative to the outer housing. The outer housing may comprise a first downstream outer contact member comprising a first upstream facing outer contact surface configured along a first radial contact line. The outer housing may comprise a second downstream outer contact member comprising a second upstream facing outer contact surface configured, and radially spaced from the first upstream facing outer contact surface, along the first radial contact line to define a downstream outer chamber opening of a downstream outer housing chamber therebetween. The inner housing may comprise a first bristle layer in physical communication with a first upstream facing inner contact surface configured along a second radial contact line. A downstream facing surface of the inner housing may be maintained in physical communication with at least the first upstream facing outer contact surface and the second upstream facing outer contact surface during radial displacement thereof. At all relative radial positions of the inner housing relative to the outer housing, during use, a collective contact surface between the downstream facing surface of the inner housing and both the first upstream facing outer contact surface and the second upstream facing outer contact surface may be greater than a collective surface of the downstream outer chamber opening.
