摘要: A brake shoe assembly includes a backing plate and a brake lining. The brake lining has an interface surface abutting the backing plate and a wear surface for contacting a vehicle. A pair of temperature sensors are positioned adjacent to the interface surface and spaced unequal distances from the wear surface for determining the thickness of the brake lining. The pair of temperature sensors may be embedded directly in the brake lining or encapsulated in one of a plurality of housing embodiments packaged in the brake lining. In a preferred embodiment, a unique brake lining temperature sensor assembly is attached to the brake shoe assembly. The unique temperature sensor assembly includes a body of material having a proximate end positioned adjacent to the backing plate and a distal end for contacting the vehicle concurrently with the wear surface of the brake lining. A heat pipe, disposed within the body of material, extends from the distal end toward the proximate end. A first electrical conductor is attached to the heat pipe to form a first thermoelectric junction. A second electrical conductor is attached to the heat pipe to form a second thermoelectric junction spaced from the first thermoelectric junction. The heat pipe provides a thermal communication path from the distal end of the sensor body to the first and second thermoelectric junctions. In this manner, heat waves or fronts, produced when the distal end of the sensor body contacts the vehicle, are transmitted quickly through the heat pipe from the distal end of the sensor body to the first and second thermoelectric junctions and used to determine the thickness of the brake lining.

摘要: An device for controlling a level of lubricant in a gear housing of an automotive vehicle that has a sealed interior portion containing lubricant. A gear is rotatably mounted in the housing and rotates through the lubricant. The housing includes at least one wall secured to a bottom portion of the sealed interior portion. The wall defines a first and second space wherein the gear rotates in the first space and displaces the lubricant over the wall into the second space as the gear rotates at high speeds. The wall has an opening of a predetermined size that allows the lubricant to flow back into the first space at a rate greater than the displacement rate at low speeds and less than the displacement rate at high speeds. The gear and housing may be an axle housing, a transmission or other gears and housings.

摘要: Systems are provided which retard rotation of a driveline at times associated with an engine firing pulse from an engine driving the driveline to reduce torque peaks. In one system, a control monitors rotation of a drive shaft, to provide an indication of when an engine firing pulse should occur. The control selectively closes a switch to power a coil such that the coil retards rotation of the driveline, and generates electricity for use elsewhere. In a second embodiment, circumferentially spaced magnets are mounted on a driveline and move past a coil at a selected circumferential location. The coil resists the rotation of the shaft, retarding torque peaks. The embodiments thus reduce or eliminate imbalances in rotation of the shaft due to engine firing pulses.

摘要: An oil contamination detection assembly includes a housing adapted for installation into a vehicular pneumatic brake system having a supply of air contaminated with oil. A surface is disposed within the housing for communicating with the air of the brake system and accumulating a film of the oil contaminating the air. A sensor directs a wave, such as an electromagnetic wave, having a predetermined characteristic at the surface, receives a wave reflected from the surface having a characteristic altered by the film of oil accumulated on the surface, and produces an oil contamination warning signal based upon the altered characteristic of the reflected wave.

摘要: A wheel drive assembly and suspension for a vehicle wheel includes a spindle, a wheel drive shaft that rotates relative to the spindle about an axis of rotation, and an electric motor that has a motor output shaft for driving the wheel drive shaft. A motor housing encloses a speed reducing planetary gear set that is driven by the motor output shaft. The motor output shaft and the wheel drive shaft are co-axial. A suspension arm extends in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation. The suspension arm includes a pivot end attached to a vehicle structure and an attachment end that is rigidly attached to the motor housing such that the electric motor is a structural part of the suspension.

摘要: A low cost brake sensor incorporates a sensor portion extending through one of the rivet holes in the backing plate of the brake pad. A locking sleeve snaps onto the sensor portion and secures the sensor to the backing plate. Preferably, the locking sleeve has a lip which snaps into a groove in an outer periphery of a sensor portion. The present invention thus provides a relatively low cost and secure way for attaching the sensor to the brake pad. No modification of the lining or the backing plate is necessary.

摘要: A vehicle suspension is provided that includes a frame supporting a pair of laterally spaced apart suspension members pivotally supported on the frame and movable in a vertical direction. A pair of wheel ends is each supported respectively on one of the suspension members. A stabilizer bar is supported on the frame laterally between the suspension members. The stabilizer bar includes opposing ends each respectively proximate to one of the suspension members. A pair of resilient stabilizer bar links each respectively interconnect one of the ends and one of the suspension members and transmit torsional force to the stabilizer bar in response to movement of the suspension members in the vertical direction during roll conditions. The links have first and second deflection rates during the roll condition with the first rate being less than the second deflection rate. The links transition from the first deflection rate to the second deflection rate and from the second deflection rate to an effective zero deflection rate.

摘要: A vehicle drive assembly includes an electric motor directly coupled to a rotatable member for driving a wheel, for example, without gear reduction assemblies between the motor output and the driven wheels. A multi-phase, high pulse current stepper motor is used as the motor in one example. A driven wheel is supported by a wheel mounting member in a conventional fashion. A rotatable member associated with the wheel mounting member is directly coupled to an output of the stepper motor. The stepper motor can selectively operate in several modes. A first mode provides driving torque to the vehicle wheels, a second mode provides a braking force and an optional third mode allows the stepper motor to serve as a parking brake.
