摘要： A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for controlling a remote device from a client computer using a digital image of a remote location associated with the remote device. Using graphical user interface (GUI) provided by a client computer, the user select areas in the digital image for mapping to control functions for the remote device. These control functions are associated with command objects downloaded from a server computer and displayed on the graphical user interface. The control functions for the remote device can then be selected by moving a cursor over the selected areas of the digital image. When a control function is selected, the client computer formulates a request that the server computer and/or remote device can understand. Instantaneous feedback is provided by the digital image for any control functions that may be invoked by the user.

摘要： A method for providing rated hypermedia content, in which the rating represents degrees of objectionable content, includes four steps: generating raw hypermedia content from a set of units containing data from external data files, obtaining content rating vectors associated with the external data files, deriving a composite content rating vector for the raw hypermedia content from the content rating vectors, and storing the composite content rating vector in the raw hypermedia content to produce rated hypermedia content. Preferably, the raw hypermedia content is a raw search result page created automatically by a search engine in response to a query from a client machine. A rated search result page is generated and transmitted to the client machine over a computer network. The units may represent external data files, preferably other Web pages, and the content rating vectors represent the degrees of objectionable content of the Web pages. Content rating vectors are obtained directly from the external data files or by rating them automatically. The external data files may be of any type, including audio, text, image, or a combination. The composite content rating vector comprises a set of components, and each component is derived from corresponding components of the content rating vectors. Each component may equal the maximum value of the corresponding components of the content rating vectors.

摘要： A computer executable "aggregate" task is processed by dividing it into subtasks and distributing the subtasks "on demand" to remotely located subscribing computers via a computer network. The aggregate task originates at a coordinating computer, coupled to one or more peripheral computers by appropriate communications links. The coordinating computer divides the aggregate task into multiple independent subtasks. Each peripheral computer begins to "subscribe" to the coordinating computer's aggregate task by obtaining an "idle time activation program" from the coordinating computer, and then installing the program locally. The idle time activation program which may include a screen saver, activates automatically when the subscribing computer is inactive. Continuing the subscription process, each peripheral computer requests a subtask from the coordinating computer. In response, the coordinating computer distributes different subtasks among the subscribing computers, completing the subscription process. The subscribing computers automatically work on their respective subtasks whenever they are idle, as directed by the local idle time activation program. When a subscribing computer completes its subtask, it transmits results back to the coordinating computer. When results of all subtasks have been received from subscribing computers, the coordinating computer compiles and stores these results, concluding the aggregate task.
