    摘要: A method and related apparatus for sensing selected emotions or physical conditions in a human subject. The technique employs a two-dimensional camera to generate a facial image of a human subject. Then, an image processing module scans the image to locate the face position and extent, and then scans for selected critical areas of the face. The size and activity of the selected critical areas are monitored by comparing sequential image frames of the subject's face, and the areas are tracked to compensate for possible movements of the subject. The sensed parameters of the selected critical areas are compared with those stored in a database that associates activities of the critical areas with various emotional and physical conditions of the subject, and a report or assessment of the subject is generated.

    摘要: A pulsed coherent fiber array laser system that includes a beam generating sub-system that provides a signal pulse beam having pulses of the desired duration that is split into several fiber channels. Optical leakage between the pulses in each split beam is measured and locked to a reference beam by a phase sensing circuit and phase adjusters so that the phase of each fiber pulsed beam is aligned with the phase of the reference beam. A pulse clipper or filter is employed to remove the pulses in the fiber beams so that they do not saturate the phase sensing circuit. The beam generating sub-system can employ any suitable combination of devices to generate the signal beam and the reference beam, including continuous wave master oscillators, amplitude modulators, frequency shifters, injection seed oscillators, Q-switched lasers, reference oscillators, frequency lockers, wavelength division multiplexers, time gated switches, etc.

    摘要: A laser array architecture scalable to very high powers by fiber amplifiers, but in which the output wavelength is selectable, and not restricted by the wavelengths usually inherent in the choice of fiber materials. A pump beam at a first frequency is amplified in the fiber amplifier array and is mixed with a secondary beam at a second frequency to yield a frequency difference signal from each of an array of optical parametric amplifiers. A phase detection and correction system maintains the array of outputs from the amplifiers in phase coherency, resulting in a high power output at the desired wavelength. A degenerate form of the architecture is disclosed in an alternate embodiment, and a third embodiment employs dual wavelength fiber amplifiers to obtain an output at a desired difference frequency.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for detecting a target substance in an atmospheric target area. The target area is illuminated with a laser beam to produce back-scatter light from substances within the target area. The back-scatter light is combined with a sample of the target substance within a hollow core fiber that has been pumped with a laser spectrum identical to the illuminating bean. If a back-scatter spectrum matches the pumped sample in the hollow core fiber, stimulated Raman scattering emissions can occur, which provide optical gain for the matching spectrum. A detector analyzes the amplified matching spectrum to identify the target substance. The disclosed apparatus may be expanded to detect multiple target substances simultaneously by using hollow core fibers containing different target samples.

    摘要: A fiber optic phased array, as well as associated methods and apparatus for controllably adjusting the frequency of the optical signals emitted by a fiber optic phased array, are provided that permit wide band phase control and may be implemented utilizing conventional analog electronics. In this regard, the method and apparatus can independently control the phase of the optical signals propagating through each fiber optic amplifier of the fiber optic phased array, even as large optical phase disturbances occur. As such, the control method and apparatus permit a fiber optic phased array to generate a flat phase front that, in turn, can provide a diffraction limited output laser beam. Alternatively, the control method and apparatus may be designed such that the output signals emitted by an array of fiber optic amplifiers has any other desired phase front, such as to compensate for atmospheric perturbations or the like.

    摘要: A multi-aperture fiber laser system that includes a fiber amplifier laser engine having a tunable master oscillator, a wavelength selective beam router optically connected to the laser engine, and a plurality of beam directors optically connected to the wavelength selective beam router. The tunable master oscillator outputs a first optical signal selectively tuned to at least one specific wavelength. The wavelength selective beam router receives a plurality of second optical signals that have the same at least one wavelength of the first optical signal. The wavelength selective beam router then routes each second optical signal to one of the beam director assemblies based the wavelength of the second optical signals. Thus, the multi-aperture fiber laser system enables a single high power fiber amplifier laser engine to supply laser power to more than one beam director in a highly flexible and efficient manner.

    摘要: A multimode Raman fiber amplifier and method for generating high levels of laser output power from arbitrary pump laser wavelengths using Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in optical fibers of a dual clad design. The optical fibers are amplified in such a manner that facilitates high power, improves brightness conversion, increases conversion efficiency, effectuates lower laser pump brightness, and increases output beam quality. The invention includes a signal core which can support an arbitrary multimode signal from a pump laser, an SRS pump core, and low index outer cladding. The refractive indices of the aforementioned are designed to propagate SRS along the length of the optical fiber.

    摘要: An electron beam pumped semiconductor laser which includes a substrate, an optical gain structure provided on the substrate, the optical gain structure being comprised of a plurality of alternating quantum well layers and isolation layers, the quantum well layers being spaced apart from one another by respective, intervening ones of the isolation layers by a sufficient distance to substantially isolate the quantum well layers from one another, and a first reflective layer provided on a first surface of the optical gain structure. With this construction, the quantum well layers are quantum mechanically uncoupled. Further, the optical gain structure has a total thickness which is sufficient to enable the optical gain structure to be coupled to excitation of an electron beam produced by an electron beam pumping device and directed through the first reflective layer and incident upon the optical gain structure. All of the quantum well layers of the optical gain structure are preferably well-matched in terms of their thickness and compositional uniformity, so that each of the quantum well layers effectively functions as an independent optical gain region having a spectral gain region which is substantially coincident with that of all of the other quantum well layers. Preferably, each of the quantum well layers is strained, with each of the strained quantum well layers preferably having a thickness less than their pseudomorphic strain limit thickness. The semiconductor laser preferably further includes a second reflective layer provided on a second surface of the optical gain structure, whereby a laser cavity is provided in the region bounded by the first and second reflective layers, with the first reflective layer serving as the rear mirror and the second reflective layer serving as the front or output mirror of the laser. The first reflective layer is preferably mostly transmissive with respect to the electron beam and mostly reflective with respect to the laser light generated within the laser cavity. The second reflective layer is preferably partially transmissive and partially reflective with respect to the laser light generated within the laser cavity.

    摘要: An electron beam pumped semiconductor laser includes a semiconductor laser screen and an electron beam source adjacent the semiconductor laser screen. The semiconductor laser screen comprises a transparent single crystal substrate, an electron beam responsive active gain layer on the substrate, and first and second reflective layers. The epitaxial electron beam responsive active gain layer has a crystal structure in alignment with the crystal structure of the substrate, and the first and second reflective layers define a laser cavity through the epitaxial electron beam responsive active gain layer therebetween. The electron beam source generates an electron beam which impinges on the epitaxial electron beam responsive active gain layer thereby generating a laser output. Accordingly, the single crystal active gain layer can be formed on the substrate by epitaxial deposition techniques increasing the performance and reliability of the electron beam pumped semiconductor laser.
