Abstract: A threaded insert and method for making same which is particularly usable when fixedly positioned within a base material which itself is molded about the threaded insert, the threaded insert comprising a generally cylindrical body which is preferably knurled about the exterior thereof to provide a means for fixed securement between the insert and the surrounding base material, the cylindrical body including a central bore extending part way or completely through the insert, the central bore being threaded such that each individual thread includes a burnished end thereof such as to provide an arcuate surface immediately adjacent the mold or immediately adjacent the pin extending through the central bore to prevent the seepage of base material when under pressure during molding past the threads to foul the threads by having base material therein, the dimension of the burnishing on the tips of the threads being of such small dimension that the first placement of a threaded male member into the threaded central bore of the insert will immediately scrape off the burnished edges and thereby assume the normal threaded configuration, the threaded inserts being of either a closed end or open ended configuration which may further include a burnished edge at the uppermost edge of the outer knurled surface to also prevent the seepage of injected base material between this upper edge of the external surface and the head area of the pin.

Abstract: An electrically heated tip assembly, particularly useful with a cyclically operated thermal press usable for forcible placement of inserts of hard material within bases of softer materials, includes a generally longitudinal tubular core member formed of a thermally conductive material. The core encloses an electric resistance heating element and has a tip element secured to one end thereof in heat exchange relationship with the heating element. The tip element includes a protruding finger member engageable with an insert and a paraboloidal section between the core member and protruding finger member to facilitate the concentration of heat downwardly into the finger member during the insertion portion of the operating cycle of the press. A heat dissipation member, including a plurality of spaced, outwardly extending, annular disks forming a generally upwardly extending envelope of overall paraboloidal configuration, is adjustably positioned about the core to facilitate the dissipation of heat from the tip element and core member inbetween cycles of operation of the press.

Abstract: One piece metal insert adapted to be embedded in a cavity in a work piece embodies a sleeve portion and a nut portion joined together by a frangible connection. The sleeve portion has an internal diameter which is less than a zone of maximum diameter on the nut portion and is adapted to be moved into a telescoping position about the nut portion so as to be expanded by the nut portion and forced into firm engagement with the side walls of the cavity in the work piece. The sleeve portion has splines on the exterior thereof which are inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the insert so that when they are embedded in the side walls of the cavity they will establish a positive connection with the work piece and resist axial movement of the sleeve portion with respect to the work piece. The nut portion of the insert has ribs on the exterior thereof in a zone of maximum diameter so that when the sleeve portion of the insert is forced into a position wherein it surrounds the nut portion the ribs will cut into the inner surface of the sleeve portion and establish a positive connection therewith.

Abstract: A tank handling apparatus which is usable for loading and unloading of a tank such as an oxygen tank with respect to a location of usage such as an emergency vehicle. The handling apparatus is capable of securely locking the tank in place at the storage or usage position while at the same time easily allowing it to be detached therefrom and transferred to a tank service position for removal and replacement or servicing. The apparatus includes a unique locking mechanism including a locking hook construction and a locking housing with a locking slide movably mounted therein wherein a locking handle is secured thereto for movement of the locking slide between the position of engagement and the position of release of the locking hook. Multiple locking hooks and locking slides can be utilized for further secure attachment of the tank in the storage position.

Abstract: An apparatus for bridging of a hose to facilitate movement of vehicle wheels over a hose without damaging thereof which is of significant strength as well as being collapsible such as to be easily stored on emergency vehicles where limited space is available. The improved apparatus includes multi-directional ramps along with a hose bridging central member which is interconnected to multiple similarly shaped members to provide the capability of bridging one or more hoses while including ramps extending from both opposite directions. The design is particularly capable of being constructed of aluminum for lightweight advantages and includes a detachable engagement means for the ramps with respect to the central hose bridging member which is particularly advantageous when made from aluminum.
