Prior to downloading the media item, the user may first download an approximation of each group of pictures (GOPs) of the video. The user can then browse through the approximations to determine which of the GOPs to download. Each approximation may include at least part of the intra frame (“I-frame”) of the corresponding GOP. In particular, the approximation may include, only the low-frequency, component of the I-frame or the I-frame itself. Once downloaded, the approximations may be displayed, and the user may select one or more of the approximations to selectively download the corresponding GOPs. The selected GOPs may thereafter be downloaded in accordance with a selected level of specificity or detail.
