    摘要: A fault interrupter and load break switch includes a trip assembly configured to automatically open a transformer circuit electrically coupled to stationary contacts of the switch upon the occurrence of a fault condition. The fault condition causes a Curie metal element electrically coupled to at least one of the stationary contacts to release a magnetic latch. The release causes a trip rotor of the trip assembly to rotate a rotor assembly. This rotation causes ends of a movable contact of the rotor assembly to electrically disengage the stationary contacts, thereby opening the circuit. The switch also includes a handle for manually opening and closing the electrical circuit in fault and non-fault conditions. Actuation of the handle coupled to the rotor assembly via a spring-loaded rotor causes the movable contact ends to selectively engage or disengage the stationary contacts.

In a combined current limiter-circuit breaker (1) as claimed in the invention, a movable electrode (3, 3′) on the one hand for current limitation is guided automatically along one resistance element (5) for the current limitation path (31) by an overcurrent-dependent electromagnetic force (Fmag) and on the other hand for circuit breaking is moved into a series arrangement with an insulator (8). Embodiments include the following, among others: Use of the Lorenz force for automatic current limiting; movable electrode (3, 3′) implemented by liquid metal (3) or movable solid-state conductor (3′); an electrical resistance (Rx) which increases nonlinearly in the direction of motion (x) for a gentle current limiting characteristic; and a resistance element (5) in the form of a dielectric matrix (5) with several channels (3a) for the liquid metal (3). Advantages are among others: arc-free, reversible current limitation and current interruption, also suited for high voltages and currents, fast reaction times, low wear, and ease of maintenance.

    摘要: A system and method for preventing contact weld under various fault current conditions is disclosed. The system includes a contactor having stationary and movable contacts biased towards each other and switchable between an open and closed position. Energization of an electromagnetic coil engages the contacts creating an electric path for current flow through the contactor. Pulse width modulation is used to lower the power to the coil and maintain the contacts in the closed position. The contactor is equipped with safeguards to prevent contact welding. Under low fault currents, welding is prevented by contact material composition. Under intermediate fault currents, the contacts are blown open and remain open using magnetic components until the arc dissipates and the contacts have cooled sufficiently. Under high fault currents, the arrangement causes the contacts to blow open and separate the armature from the coil preventing re-engagement of the contacts until the coil is energized again.

    摘要: A circuit breaker having a shunting contact structure with low watts loss and high withstand level. The circuit breaker of the present invention comprises an upper contact arm having a first contact disposed thereon and a lower contact arm having second and third contacts thereon with the second contact mating with the first contact. A shunt terminal is provided between the upper contact arm and the lower contact arm. The shunt terminal includes a fourth contact which mates with the third contact on the lower contact arm. The circuit breaker of the current invention has a closed, open and current limiting position. When the circuit breaker is conducting nominal rated current, the first, second, third and fourth contacts remain closed. When the circuit breaker is under fault conditions which are circuit current conditions above the withstand level, the circuit breaker switches to a current limiting mode. In this mode, the upper contact arm and the lower contact arm move simultaneously in an upward and downward manner respectively, thereby opening the third and fourth contacts resulting in a blow open loop that opens the first and second contacts and protect a load coupled to the device from overcurrent conditions.

    摘要: A device for switching electric current includes a compressed gas switch, at least one vacuum switch, and two terminals. A first consumable contact of the compressed gas switch is electrically connected to a first of the two terminals and a movable electrode of the vacuum switch is connected to a second of the two terminals to form a quenching circuit. The two electrodes of the vacuum switch can be separated without the use of the drive and a contact pressure is applied to them which prevents the electrodes from breaking below a threshold value of the current to be switched off. On switch-off, the current to be interrupted is switched over from a rated current circuit containing two rated current contacts of the compressed gas switch to the parallel quenching circuit. The vacuum switch now in the quenching circuit breaks only if the current to be switched off exceeds the aforementioned threshold. As the vacuum switch does not conduct the rated current and, unlike the compressed gas switch, is involved only in a few break operations, it can be of substantially lighter construction than a vacuum switch carrying the rated current and is actuated in every switching operation.

    摘要: A circuit interrupter provides a conducting path between two conductors and interrupts the conducting path in response to overcurrent conditions in the conductors. The interrupter includes a magnetic core around which the conductors are disposed. Each conductor is electrically coupled to an arc runner and a spanner is biased into contact with the arc runners to compete a conducting path between the conductors. A secondary response mechanism is provided adjacent to the core and includes arms extending around the core and a magnetic body. In response to overcurrent conditions of a first magnitude the body of the secondary response mechanism is attracted to the core causing the arms to displace the spanner out of contact with the arc runners. In response to overcurrent conditions of a second magnitude, such as due to direct short circuits, the spanner is repelled rapidly to a non-conducting position and the secondary response mechanism is attracted to the core to hold the spanner in the non-conducting position. The core shapes an electromagnetic field due to current in the conductors and the field causes extremely rapid expansion of arcs generated during movement of the spanner, resulting in very fast extinction of the arcs and a very brief turnoff time.
