Abstract: Apparatus for barking timber, comprising a barking drum and a pretreatment device for patching, that is barking of the timber in spots, the timber is subjected to slashing of its bark in a transverse, longitudinal or oblique direction, this pretreatment device is formed of conveyors and patching members. The conveyors consist of a set of spreading rolls, which spreads the timber longitudinally fed into the pretreatment device to the form of a uniform timber mat, which moves uniformly forward, and of a set of rotating rolls, which transports the pieces of timber and at the same time rotates them about their axes. The patching members previously known in themselves are associated with the set of rotating rolls.

Abstract: A bacon slicing machine wherein the product is placed onto the exposed horizontal supporting surface of a table which is movable between an extended and a retracted position. The front portion of the table overlies the cutting edge of the knife and the apex of a rotary feeding wheel in the extended position of the table to thus prevent injury to the hands of an attendant. A spring biases the table to the extended position, and a bar is provided at the rear end of the table to be depressed by the hips of an attendant standing behind the table in order to move the table to the retracted position in which the product can be pushed along the supporting surface, along an upwardly or downwardly inclined platform which forms part of the front portion of the table, and into the range of the feeding wheel. The supporting surface of the table and the cutting plane of the knife make an acute angle of between 15.degree. and 50.degree.. A switch is provided to arrest the motor for the feeding wheel when the table leaves the retracted position, and the table is pivotable to raise its front portion above the feeding wheel and the knife subsequent to movement of the table to the extended position.

Abstract: A ring type debarker in which the arm carrying section is mounted for rotation on a centrally disposed, tube-like member through which the logs pass while being debarked. The central support member is supported in cantilever fashion from the outfeed end thereof. Mounted for rotation with the arm carrying section are means to circulate oil through the main bearing which supports the rotary parts and an air compressor and a receiver for the same. Each arm is equipped with expansible flexible bellows-like air bag members for holding the tool ends of the arms in log engaging positions. The compressor and pump are driven by means of a ring gear mounted on the ring support member, the pump and compressor in turn carrying pinions in mesh with said ring gear.

Abstract: The invention provides processes and apparatus for removing bark from logs. The logs are subjected to mechanically applied compression forces acting against the sides of the logs, these forces being such as to expel juices from the ends of the logs. The pressure on a log is preferably between 500 and 3,000 p.s.i. per square inch measured on the area of the diametrical plane of the log. This compression provides loosening the bark which can then be readily removed. Preferably, a stack of logs is simultaneously compressed by means of a hydraulic press, and the juices which are expelled from the ends of the log are collected for sale as a by-product. The loosened bark on the log is then removed by a mechanical frictional treatment.

Abstract: Chain type log transports are located at the infeed and outfeed sides, respectively, of a rotary barking ring and are constructed to be positioned as close as possible to the barking ring to transport logs of minimum length through the barking ring. The transports include flights with centrally depressed portions, which flights are mounted by their tips on spaced conveyor chains so as to minimize the radius of the arcs traversed by the flights adjacent to opposite sides of the log-barking ring to enable the flights to be placed as close as possible to the log-barking ring. The radius of the arcuate flight paths is further minimized by the flights being tapered in cross section away from their log-cradling sides to avoid interference between adjacent flights as they turn through their arcuate paths adjacent to the opposite sides of the log-barking ring.

Abstract: A rotary ring-type log debarker has barking tools operated by double-acting air cylinders with air pressure supplied through solenoid valves from a pressure chamber in the rotor. During normal debarker operation the rotor pressure chamber is isolated from an external source of air pressure. Air is supplied to the rotor pressure chamber intermittently only when necessary to maintain or increase air pressure in the chamber through a pilot air-operated ring-type air seal between the rotor and its stator. The seal is loaded only during the addition of air to the rotor pressure chamber to minimize wear on the sealing surfaces. Positive, instantaneous opening and closing of the tools and changes in air pressure in the rotor pressure chamber are effected from a remote operator's console while the rotor is either rotating or stationary.
