摘要:
A connector for coupling a pair of single optical fibers is disclosed. The connector comprises a deformable elastomeric alignment element having a bore therethrough having a central uniform diameter portion and outwardly tapered end portions. Two sets of three equal diameter cylindrical rods are mounted in the opposite ends of the bore. Each set of rods defines an interstitial space therebetween which receives an optical fiber. The sets of rods have mating end faces which abut each other in the bore. The rods of each set have an interference fit in the central portion of the bore causing the rods to be resiliently compressed inwardly to engage each other and the fiber therebetween. By the compression of the rods, the rods of each set are disposed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle so that the fibers in the interstitial spaces between the rods become precisely laterally aligned. The number of rods in each set may exceed three so that a plurality of interstitial spaces are defined by the rods for coupling more than one pair of single optical fibers.

This invention provides a connector for optical fibers which includes two connector sections each of which has a means for holding an optical fiber, one of the sections having an inclined surface engaged by the end portions of both of the fibers where their end faces abut. One of the fibers is bent to its position of engagement with the inclined surface as held in one section of the connector. The other of the optical fiber is bent by the inclined surface as the two connector sections are brought together to a mated position.

In an optical fiber connector, the pair of optical fibers to be connected together are placed end-to-end in a linear groove which has been formed on a lateral surface of a central cylinder. They are held fixed by a holding member which is fitted in the groove and is moved towards the optical fibers according to the rotation of a hollow cylinder which externally touches the central cylinder, whereby the optical fibers can be connected with a precise alignment and accordingly with a low optical power loss.

In accordance with the disclosed invention, a first group of optical fiber waveguides is spliced to a second, similar group of optical fiber waveguides using a unique foldable holder. The holder illustratively comprises a relatively thin wafer formed of a bendable material, such as a plastic or metal, and includes first and second sections disposed about a centrally extended fold line. Each section of the holder includes a plurality of grooves laterally spaced in a parallel relation symmetrically about the fold line for receiving and aligning the individual fibers in each fiber group to be spliced. To achieve the desired splice, the fibers in a first group are placed and then fixed in the grooves of the first section of the holder, while the fibers in a second group are placed and then fixed in the grooves of the second section of the holder. The assembly is then placed in a fiber scoring and breaking tool which divides each of the fibers in the two groups along the same line perpendicular both to the fiber axes and to the holder fold line. The unwanted ends of the fiber groups are then removed from the holder and discarded, and the holder is folded about its fold line bringing the fibers in the first group in accurate alignment with the corresponding fibers of the second group to complete the splice.

A fiber optic cable for use in a fiber optic connector in which a ferrule is compressed around the end of the fiber bundle in the cable. The bore in the ferrule has a cylindrical wall with circumferentially spaced flat surfaces thereon which minimize the compression hoop effects on the peripheral fibers of the bundle, thereby maximizing fiber bundle consolidation.

Substantial reductions in the distortion loss in an optical fiber waveguide due to the influence of random external forces can be realized by encasing the fiber in a properly designed jacket. In accordance with the disclosed invention, the ability of a jacketed optical fiber structure to resist external forces is characterized by a parameter referred to as its retention length R, given by ##EQU1## WHERE H is the flexural rigidity of the jacketed fiber and D.sub.f is the lateral rigidity of the jacketed fiber. It is shown that minimum distortion loss can be achieved by designing the fiber jacket so that the retention length R of the combined fiber-jacket structure exceeds a critical coupling wavelength .LAMBDA..sub.c for the fiber. A variety of illustrative jacket designs are described.

A fiber optic cable for use in a fiber optic connector has a transparent sleeve formed on the end of the fiber optic bundle of the cable. The end of the sleeve is closed and extends over the end surface of the bundle to form an optical window therefor and a protective spacer so that when two cables are mated in abutting relationship the end surfaces of the fiber bundles are spaced apart, preventing end surface bundle scratching which causes excessive light diffusion and results in light reception losses.

Fiber optic displacement/position measuring apparatus having increased working distance and measuring range capability is provided by combining an optical extending sensing head in fixed relationship with the common end of a bifurcated fiber optic bundle. The sensing head includes a lens system which is operative to focus the image of the end face of the fiber optic bundle onto the surface of an object whose displacement is to be determined and to refocus that image back onto the end in an upright relationship.
