The control plunger partitions the control cylindrical bore into first and second chambers. The same pressure as that of fuel in the pumping chamber (which serves to feed fuel) is transmitted to the first chamber, while fuel is supplied to the second chamber through a control passage. An electromagnetic valve is arranged in the control passage and the amount of fuel with which the second chamber is filled is adjusted by controlling the electromagnetic valve.

Spill ports of the same number as that of the cylinders of the engine communicating with a pump chamber are opened at an equal peripheral interval on the outer peripheral surface of the rotor, and a spill ring to cover the spill ports is slidably mounted on the outer peripheral surface of the rotor. A spill groove is formed to extend axially on the inner peripheral surface of this spill ring. One edge of the spill groove, which initially meets the respective spill ports during the pressurizing step for pressurizing the fuel in the pump chamber, is inclined to the axis, and the other edge of the spill groove is parallel to the axis.

In a diesel engine controlling system having a fuel injection pump, a fuel injection timing adjusting device is controlled by a drive pulse signal whose duty cycle is controlled by a microcomputer. The duty cycle is determined such that a basic duty cycle obtained by using engine rotational speed and injection quantity, is modified or corrected by way of a correction factor and a forecast correction factor. The-first mentioned correction factor comprises an integration component and a proportional component both derived from the difference between a measured fuel injection or ignition timing and a desired or reference fuel injection or ignition timing, which is calculated by using the engine rotational speed and the injection quantity. The forecast correction factor corresponds to a differential value of the basic duty cycle or the desired fuel injection or ignition timing. In order to detect the fuel injection or ignition timing a timing detector is employed, where the state of an output signal from the detector is monitored to prohibit calculation of the difference or error, thereby correcting the basic duty cycle by only the forecast correction factor when the detector is in abnormal condition.

The engine speed is periodically detected at every predetermined crankshaft angles for obtaining a plurality of engine speed data whose number equals an integral multiple of the number of cylinders of an internal combustion engine. Either maximum or minimum values among the plurality of engine speed data is determined, and such operations are repeated for a duration covering all power strokes within all the cylinders, thereby obtaining a plurality of sets of engine speed data. Then the order of engine speed data giving the maximum or minimum value within each set is obtained, and majority decision is effected to determine which order of data gives the maximum or minimum most frequently throughout all the sets. The difference between the maximum and minimum values is obtained for each set, and the amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine is controlled so that the difference becomes common to all the cylinders. The fuel amount control may be effected by means of an actuator which controls the position of a spill ring of a distributor injection pump.

In a fuel injection system having a fuel injection pump of distribution type with an electromagnetic valve controlling the communication between a spill port and a lower pressure fuel chamber, the closing duration of the electromagnetic valve is controlled by a computer so that the closing duration is defined as the sum of prestroke time and actual injection time which are both prestored in one or more memories. The actual injection time is controlled in accordance with engine operating condition, while the prestroke time may also be controlled by manually setting the same or by way of a feedback control. The sum, which defines the closing duration of the electromagnetic valve, may be limited by a maximum value, which may be manually adjustable, so as to prevent excessive fuel flow. The prestroke time may be uniformly controlled through all the cylinders or may be independently controlled for respective cylinders.

The sensor is disposed in an exhaust passage to produce a voltage indicative of the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. This voltage is integrated in the feedback circuit with the integration constant predetermined to vary with respect to the time. Air-to-fuel ratio of the mixture to be supplied to the engine is corrected to the predetermined air-to-fuel ratio in response to the integrated voltage. With the integration constant decreasing with respect to the time, the air-to-fuel ratio is speedily returned to the predetermined ratio.
